Tips for Sticking to Your Diet This Party Season

Tips for Sticking to Your Diet This Party Season

It’s that time of year again; the time of year where our waistlines tend to expand. Goodies, treats and delicacies are out in full force and our will-power is put to the ultimate test.  Yes, it’s party season. Office parties, holiday-themed galas, personal get-togethers and special events are scheduled virtually every weekend and various nights throughout the week and it’s impossible to avoid it all.

So, the question is, how can you possibly maintain your diet while attending all these events?  These are a few simple things to keep in mind during party season that will allow you to enjoy the festivities while still maintaining your figure.

Eat Before You Go

Most people make the mistake of allotting just enough time to groom, style and get dressed before flying out the door to their event.  In the process, they fail to eat anything substantial beforehand.  Needless to say, they attend the party famished and eat and drink more than they would normally as a result.  One trick smart dieters use, is to eat something of value before a big event.  Protein-based drinks or foods are a great choice as they will keep your hunger at bay longer and allow you to control what you eat at your shindig.  If the event is a dinner party or centered mainly around food, this is especially important.

Choose Your ‘Cheats’ Carefully

Most nutritional programs will have a section geared specifically towards good food choices when eating out. However, those same programs will often omit guidelines relative to parties. Decide ahead of time what you are planning to eat.  By planning to ‘cheat’ you are likely to have more control.  Are you going to eat a piece of your favorite dessert or a savory appetizer? Make sure to choose one or two of your favorites only.  Savor your indulgences and take your time as you eat them.  Taking your time will ward off further cravings and allow you to thoroughly enjoy what you’re eating.  Splitting a piece of your favorite cake or dessert with a friend is also recommended to cut calories while still getting a little taste.

Drinks Galore

One thing you can count on at parties is the beverages.  Fruity cocktails, quality liqueurs, and bubbly punches flow freely.  What most people don’t realize is how many calories can be packed into one drink.  While celebrations are usually coupled with drinking, it’s important to note that your favorite cocktail may contain more than your average meal—especially if you add any frills or specialty garnishes. The best way to avoid over-indulging is to use a similar approach as the food choices.  Choose to indulge in one of your favorite drinks two if you dare but then switch to water, tea, or coffee with sweetener or lighter creams/milk.  Keep in mind that wines (not dessert or ice wine) are lower in calories and contain healthy antioxidants whereas spirits and liqueurs are much higher in calories and sugar content.  Be cautious with juices and punches as the sugar and alcohol content is often unknown.

Navigating the party season while on a diet can be stressful but, with the right approach, it can still be enjoyable.  Keep your goals in mind and remind yourself of the rewards you will reap as a result of your discipline and hard work.  Be smart about your choices and remember to keep active.  While there are many parties to attend, there are often equal opportunities to engage in physical activity; take advantage of these events to help you keep balanced.  And above all, keep in mind that party season only lasts for a season.
