Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

Whether you live in an apartment, condo, townhouse, family home or mansion, making sure that your home is energy efficient can save you money while also helping to save the environment. While many people are under the impression that conserving energy is difficult, this is simply not true. The fact of the matter is that there are many different things you can do in order to make your home more energy efficient.

Seal Windows and Doors

A lot of energy can escape through windows and doors that are not insulated properly. If you find that a draft is drifting through your doors or windows, then take the time to seal these areas. You can use plastic wrap, towels, or a doorstop in order to keep warm air inside.

Use a Ceiling Fan

Rather than purchasing an air conditioner, think about using a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans can keep a home cool during the summertime, but they can also keep a home warm during the wintertime. Ceiling fans should rotate counter clockwise during the summer months and clockwise during the winter months.

Timed Thermostats

Your heat really doesn’t have to be on all day long. Instead, use a programmable thermostat in order to turn your heat on and off at different points throughout the day. You’ll find that your electricity bill will drastically decrease, while your home remains at a comfortable temperature all day long.

Install a New Showerhead

There are lots of energy efficient showerheads on the market now, and using one of these showerheads (as opposed to an older one) can save lots of energy. Not only will a new energy efficient showerhead reduce water consumption, but it will also help to lower your heating bill. Also, keep in mind that taking a shower does not require as much energy as taking a bath, so skip the bath when you can.

Be Mindful of Your Washing Machine

While it may be tempting to wash loads of laundry that aren’t full, this isn’t a good idea. If you get into the habit of running the washing machine only when you have a full load, you’ll save lots of energy.

Buy a Digital Camera

Ok, so this is a stretch but there are still people out there using film cameras. To all of those people, it’s time to buy a digital camera and stop printing countless photos that sit on a shelf somewhere. This item seems almost out of place in this list but the reality is that saving energy and the environment can take many different shapes and forms, even those that you may not have considered up to now.

Clearly, saving energy isn’t difficult. Whether you live in an apartment, condo, or home, you can effectively save lots of energy by following the above tips. If you want to lower your energy bill, all you really have to do is run through the tips listed above.
