It started out as an April fools joke but quickly became a sensation, especially for those predisposed towards nostalgia.

The iCade is a retro gaming device that connects via bluetooth to an iPad or iPad 2. Equipped with an arcade joystick and 4 buttons on two rows, it’ll certainly bring joy to any geek who spent their formative years inserting coins into slots, standing in dim lit rooms, eating cheese puffs and zoning out to the clinks, beeps, buzzes and sound effects emanating from the machines around them.

There are 100 games in the “Atari Greatest Hits” iPad app which can be purchased and downloaded for $14.99. Because of the popularity of the iCade, there are numerous other games that can be used with the device. though the iCade at $99.99 does come with one free game.

The iPad arcade cabinet is available today. It supports multiple arcade machine emulators (MAME), though emulators are only available on jailbroken phones.

The iCade may be the coolest, most unique iPad add-on to hit the wide web. It’s clever design and widespread adoption is a testament to it’s creative idea. Slide in your iPad and connect via bluetooth for a no hassle retro gaming experience.
