6 Online Dating Etiquette Tips

The main problem with online dating is that this form of dating is too impulsive. It’s simply too easy to send off an email or a quick instant message without thinking. While the art of writing long-hand love letters is (somewhat sadly) gone, online dating doesn’t mean off-the-cuff thinking.

1. Pause and Reflect

You – and everyone else looking at online dating profiles – know that a dating profile picture is vital. That’s why most people look for mates online based upon an initial photograph. Yet, the person who you’re contacting deserves more than a brainless email response to a great photograph. Read profiles thoroughly; understand what a person wants, then (and only then) send off a meaningful email.

2. Get Personal

If you’ve ever sent a cover letter to a prospective employer via email, you know how important personalized emails are. Don’t be tempted to send the same generic email to various people who you’d like to date. Put some effort into the contents of any email you send.

3. Ask Questions

When you are conversing with a new love interest, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Find out what her interests are, where she’s traveled, what kinds of food she likes to eat, and whether or not she would participate in an extreme sport. Be inquisitive, but try not to be too generic when asking questions.

4. Be Yourself

Obviously, it’s not a great idea to start up a conversation with someone who is a devout Christian if you are an atheist, but don’t shy away from being yourself either. If the person who you are interested in states an opinion that you don’t agree with, make sure to stand your ground (softly). Being yourself will show a prospective mate what you’re made of.

5. Set Social Media Boundaries

Don’t assume that you can change your Facebook status to “in a relationship” without speaking with the person you are talking to first. Far too many couples who have just started to date via the Internet break up thanks to improper social media changes. Make sure you’re both on the same page when it comes to any kind of social status alteration.

6. Be Nice

Make no mistake about it – people love compliments. Be as genuine as you can be when complimenting someone. If the girl you have starting talking to has nice eyes, be sure to say so. Also, be attentive to certain qualities that other people might not notice. Maybe your new love interest is a great listener or maybe she is compassionate – these traits deserve compliments too!
