Amana AC7270AS

Note: This isn’t the usual tech gadget that is reviewed here but since I also own one of these, when this was submitted, it made sense to publish it.

Three years ago, I purchased an Amana slide-in range (with the controls in the front).  Approximately 4 months later, the range suddenly began to beep, and in the place of the time was a sign that read “F1”.  The appliance store I had purchased it from arranged for a technician to service the range as it was still under the one year warranty.  He replaced the control panel and I thought that was the end of it.

Unexpected Break-downs

About nine months later, the same thing happened, except that this time I had to pay for the service call ($240) since the warranty had run out.  I didn’t take the extended warranty offered me by the appliance store because I felt that since my old range had lasted 25 years with only a $20 element replacement, why take the warranty with modern day technology on my side. Since that time, the exact same problem has occurred two more times, costing me a total of $720. That’s four breakdowns in a three year space.

Poor Customer Service

I called Amana to advise them of my experience with their product, to no avail, even speaking to a “manager” called Tiffany who coldly informed me that without an extended warranty, there was nothing they could do.

Amana Refuses to Fix the Problem

I researched further into this matter, and it seems that this particular model has a plastic control panel (apparently they now have glass panels) and the plastic melts from the heat thus disrupting the computer on the front panel, hence the “F1” beeping (which can only be silenced by shutting down the circuit breaker for the range).

You Can’t Cook Turkeys

Every time I use the oven part of the range, I wonder if its one step closer to the dreaded “F1” sign.  Cooking a turkey for hours is out of the question – pretty sad when you consider the average family with two small children uses the oven on a continuous basis.

Now I have a choice, continue to pay $240 a year, or buy a new range, since this one has serious defects.  One thing is certain, I will never buy another Amana product.
