Montreal’s Old Port is set ablaze with colour and wonder as the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil brings its 20th big top creation to life until August 20, 2023. The latest spectacle, titled “ECHO,” is yet another groundbreaking venture that solidifies Cirque du Soleil’s international reputation for innovative and acrobatic performances. After having seen various shows in Las Vegas and last year’s Kooza, I was excited to see what this talented group had come up with for this summer.
Artistic Innovation and Acrobatic Excellence
One of the many distinctive elements of Cirque du Soleil is its commitment to human performance and the extraordinary capabilities of its artists. ECHO is no exception. With its bold visuals and contemporary aesthetic, the show once again features artists at the pinnacle of their craft. The spectacle is a tour de force of high-flying acrobatics, blending physical daring with elements of the performing arts in a manner that is quintessential Cirque du Soleil.
A New Narrative Experience
Cirque du Soleil has always been renowned for its ability to weave compelling narratives through its shows, and ECHO propels this aspect even further. Audiences will follow the journey of the protagonist, Future, as she encounters an enchanting world populated by both human and animal characters. Guided by the spirit of collaboration, these characters unite their efforts to rebuild their planet, emphasizing the delicate balance between humans, animals, and the world they share.
The Power of Original Music
Music is a vital part of the Cirque du Soleil experience. In ECHO, the original score sets the stage for a world of a thousand and one colors, wonders, and possibilities. The live band guides the audience through the themes of inventiveness, the hope of youth, and the importance of empathy, enhancing the narrative and overall impact of the performance. As usual, the music is instantly enjoyable as you’re immersed into the show.
True to form, Cirque du Soleil maintains its tradition of high-end production values with ECHO. The visually stunning sets and costumes, combined with innovative special effects, create an immersive universe that is both captivating and thought-provoking. The audacious creativity and technical prowess on display underscore why Cirque du Soleil continues to be a global leader in live entertainment.
Beyond the stage, Cirque du Soleil is also making an environmental commitment. To coincide with the premiere of ECHO, the company has proposed a tree-planting initiative in collaboration with a Montreal-based urban forestry company. More than 40 trees will be planted in the Saint-Michel district, aligning with Cirque du Soleil’s dedication to have a direct positive impact on the communities where its shows are performed.
