It’s no wonder that fitness model Tamarra Hay is being feature all over the place. Through hard work and dedication she switched from a successful career in the business world and became one of the most in-demand models in the industry. Find out where she loves to go when she sneaks away and other fun tid bits in this exclusive interview.
Where are you from?
Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. Now living in the Greater Toronto Area.
Any limitations being located in Canada?
Not really, considering I love to travel and make it a point to shoot with my favourite photogs while I’m vacationing! Oh yeah, one limitation… it’s really cold!!
Tell us about the transition from business consultant to stunning bikini model and fitness competitor.
Moving from the corporate world into modeling and fitness was definitely the smartest career move that I ever made. As an entrepreneur, business owner and consultant in the spa, health and wellness industry, I developed a strong connection with the media and a comfort level in front of the camera. This media experience certainly made the transition to modeling a smooth one, when I decided to make the leap. From that, competitive fitness was a natural evolution. As I prepared for my early modeling shoots, it reignited a passion for training that began when I was a teenager. I started training with IFBB Fitness champ, Mindi O’Brien, entered my first competition, placed 1st and 2nd in two categories… and I was hooked!
What was your first big break?
My photoshoot with Playboy/Oxygen master photographer Paul Buceta is really what kick started my modeling career and opened up a world of opportunities in both fitness and modeling.
What is it about fitness modeling that excites you?
I love that fact that my job (modeling) requires that I stay in shape at all times, as you never know when a photo shoot may arise 🙂
What was the most influential gig you’ve had?
Competing in my first fitness competition (SAF). It was a great experience and winning best over 35 and 2nd overall in bikini was just a bonus!
What’s a typical workout?
I currently train 6 days per week on a 3 day split of chest/triceps, back/biceps and legs/shoulders in addition to lots of core and stability ball work. My cardio consists of intense 30-40 minute interval work on the elliptical 6 days per week. I lace up the boxing gloves and hit the heavy bag when I need some variety or a little stress relief!
What advice would you give to someone who wants to get started in getting fit?
My advice would be to consult and work with with a certified trainer. I trained with Canada’s IFBB Champion Mindi O’Brien and followed a strict meal plan set out by her husband Dennis Beitler who is a Canadian Weight Lifting Champion and Certified Nutritionist. This took the guess work out of how to maximize my workouts to reach my goals while eating clean to get that sculpted physique I so desired.
Ever feel deprived from aweome yet fatty food?
No. I always use my “cheat meal” once a week to fulfill my sinful desires 😉
Favorite place on the planet?
Toss up between Las Vegas and South Beach.
If you had to support a “cause” of any type, what would it be?
Definitely Cancer. This dreaded disease has taken too many loved ones from my life. I am actively involved in and support Cancer Fundraisers in my community and encourage my children to do the same.
What do you do for fun in your spare time?
Sneak off for a weekend in Sin City with my best friend/husband… without the kiddies 🙂
Give us a fun fact about you.
I love to play any sport, especially the ones that involve physical contact so I can release my competitive inner aggression!
Do you have any hidden talents?
I’m a country girl at heart who loves to play guitar and sing the old George Jones and Meryl Haggard kick-back tunes!
What do you think is your sexiest body part?
I’d have to say my eyes and my smile.
The question but for men. Sexiest body part?
Beautiful eyes, contagious smile and a rock hard six pack.
Worst pick-up line used on you?
Did it hurt when you fell from heaven? And NO, it didn’t work… lol!
Name someone you’d love to meet.
I would love to have a meet and greet with Toby Keith, preferably in his bar in Vegas! I just think he is a really cool and patriotic guy with an amazing voice who took took a leap of faith and followed his dreams off the football field to centre stage.
After a brief hiatus, I will be back training for my IFBB Pro Card and focusing on next year’s FLEX Bikini Model search at the Olympia. On the modeling front, I recently shot a series of incredible images with Todd Plinke of In8 Photography. Look for these shots in fitness and MMA magazines in the near future. Finally, I was recently featured as the lingerie model for the entire year of the 2011 Gold Creek calendar. Very cool project. You can link to the calendar on my website at http://www.tamarrahay.com/.
Give a shout out to your fans!
I truly appreciate the love and support of my fans, friends and fellow fitness models. As my career has evolved, I’ve been humbled by the support I’ve received. You guys (and girls) rock!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
My goals are simple: continue to compete at a high level, sign a spokesmodel contract, continue to shoot with the best photographers in the world and live happily ever after with my beautiful family.
