Legendary Comic Artist Bart Sears Says AI Is for “Weak Creatives” at Montreal Comiccon
Legendary comic book artist Bart Sears does not mince words when it comes to AI art. In this exclusive interview at Montreal Comiccon 2026, Sears said that he’s not a fan of AI and sees no real reason for it to exist in the comic book industry.
His view is blunt: AI art feels like a shortcut. He also pushed back on the idea that younger artists are embracing AI, saying many of the young creatives he meets dislike it and can often spot it faster than older artists can.
Despite his strong criticism of AI, Sears remains optimistic about the future of comics and creative work. He said some of his past projects and toy work have been coming back around, and the industry feels like it may be picking up again.
His advice for anyone trying to enter the field is simple: Learn how to draw. Before worrying about painting, style, or shortcuts, Sears says the foundation still matters.
