I Accidentally Discovered Montreal’s Phenomenal Parade (Parade Phénoménale), and Loved It!

I’ll be honest with you. I had never heard of Montreal’s Phenomenal Parade (Parade Phénoménale) or even the Phenomena Festival  until the universe practically delivered me to it. (I know, I know. It should be called the Phenomena Parade but hey, life isn’t perfect!).

For several days, I’d been meaning to visit a particular store in Montreal, but kept putting it off. Finally, on Saturday, October 3, 2026, I decided to go. Little did I know that I’d chosen the exact time and location of a parade I knew absolutely nothing about.
As I approached the area, I noticed police cars and officers walking around, and unexpected traffic detours. After navigating some traffic and a few detours, I somehow managed to find an amazing parking spot. (Actually, that’s my super power but that’s a conversation for another day). Anyways, it was a beautiful, sunny fall day, so I walked toward my destination and noticed a crowd gathering. I had no idea what was going on, but there were people wearing some pretty cool costumes.

A surprise parade full of creativity

A few minutes later, the parade started. I was right there and I was loving it! There were incredible costumes, giant puppets, imaginative characters, and some absolutely fantastic drummers. The music was a great backdrop and the atmosphere was so much fun. One of my favourite parts was seeing these enormous, tree-like characters moving through the streets. The creativity involved was impressive, but what really caught my attention was the artistry of the people operating the giant puppets and bringing these unusual characters to life. The drummers were another highlight. Their rhythms and energy added so much to the experience. I could have listened to them for a lot longer.

What made the experience even more entertaining was realizing that I wasn’t the only person who had stumbled upon the parade by accident. I overheard other passersby asking what was happening, apparently just as surprised as I was. Eventually, I made my way toward the front of the parade, where I spotted its name and immediately Googled it. That’s when I discovered that I’d stumbled upon the fifth edition of the Parade Phénoménale, an event organized by Les Filles électriques as part of Montreal’s Festival Phénomena.

The parade took place along Saint-Laurent Boulevard in the Mile End. It was part of the festival’s broader celebration of unconventional and imaginative artistic expression.

Totally my thing… and to think, I’d never even heard of it! The number of factors that lead to me being right at the front of the parade in the exact spot that it began at the precise time is incalculable!

Sometimes the best experiences are unplanned

The parade wasn’t particularly long, but it didn’t need to be. It was creative, entertaining, full of personality, and genuinely enjoyable from beginning to end. Sometimes the best experiences are the ones you never planned. I left thinking about how much fun I’d had, all because I’d postponed a simple shopping trip a few times and happened to arrive at exactly the right place at exactly the right moment. Now that I know about the Parade Phénoménale, I’d absolutely go back. And next time, I might even plan for it!

Epilogue

As I was about to publish this article, I was fixing something on the site and stumbled upon an article that mentions the 2016 Phenomena Festival. It was written by another contributor and I had never noticed it before. She had called it an “unclassifiable art festival” and I would tend to agree. Such positive energy in the air that day. Loved it!
