It’s a zombie apocalypse and, to stay alive, you’ll need to remember some key rules. Zombieland is a comedy-horror that highlights Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) as he tries to survive in a world gone fetid. His list of rules serve to keep him alive as he snakes his way back home to see what’s left of his family. Running into another survivor, Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) – a vulgar redneck on the hunt for the world’s last Twinkie, he makes his dutiful way home whilst trying to remain alive. Unexpected company turns their plans upside down, and Columbus must decide whether to remain loyal to the rules that have kept him alive thus far.
Zombieland does a creative job combining the zombie gaming aspects with the big screen. Flirting dangerously with the romantic comedy genre, this movie serves up steak and potato violence with dialogue gravy from a can. Though this movie lacks emotional depth, its entertainment value is present to gore-loving fans of the horror niche.
Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) surprise the two male companions along the way and introduce a turmoil more disruptive even than the zombies themselves. This serves as a distractions from the Twinkie hunt and ferments the growing bond between Colombus and Tallahassee. For the most part, the four characters are alone on screen, but their identities and personalities come through clear in their humourous dialogue. You can expect to see awesome slow-motion effects, messy kills and ironic carnage.
If you’re a fan of zombie flicks, or even if you’re just into zombie video games, Zombieland will serve as an entertaining rental. If you’re not so inclined, you’ll still enjoy watching these four characters play in a world where – interestingly enough – there are no rules.
