As a crepe fan, I’ve tried a number of restaurants serving this versatile, unique dish that is not simply a different version of a pancake. Over the years, I had heard about Spanel but never took the opportunity to go. I feel like that happens a lot in Montreal, given how my list of restaurants to visit is long but getting to them is a different story altogether. Since we have so many eateries. I think that it’s a good “problem” to have but also one that happens a lot with Montreal restaurants. You know the name, pass through the area, people mention it, and somehow it still takes forever before you actually sit down and try it. Well, I finally did!
Spanel is located along Notre-Dame, in a stretch with a number of impressive restaurants nearby. It already feels like the kind of area where you expect to find tasty food with an equal vibe.
Crepes Before Dessert Crepes
I really love dessert crepes, but of course, we had to get through the lunch crepes first. The savoury crepes did the job, and the whole meal had that comfortable, casual feeling you want from a crepe restaurant. It’s the kind of place that works well for lunch, especially if you want something a little different without making the meal too complicated. That said, I was definitely thinking about dessert crepes before the savoury part was even over. I’ve got a sweet tooth and that’s the best part!
A Great Window Seat
We got what I think might be the best seat in the house: The table by the window. I love people-watching, and this little nook was a good spot for it. Notre-Dame has enough movement to make the view interesting, but not so much action that it becomes distracting. You can sit, eat, talk, and occasionally watch someone walk by without feeling like you’re in the middle of a scene. There’s also a patio in the back, which I think a lot of people would like, especially on a pleasant sunny day. I could also see Spanel as a good date spot.
Good Food, Slower Service
I’m glad I finally tried the place. I’d say the only real issue was the service. It was a bit slow, and getting the final bill took a while. That stood out even more because the restaurant was almost empty when we were there, which I’m guessing is rare. Maybe we just came on the right day at the right time and missed the rush. But when a place is quiet, you do notice delays more. It was not a deal breaker by any stretch.
Worth a Visit
Spanel is a pleasant Notre-Dame crepe spot that’s worth a visit. I wouldn’t call it a life-changing restaurant, but I enjoyed it. It’s the kind of place that makes sense for a relaxed lunch, especially if you like crepes and want to try somewhere different.
