Bernies Pizza Martini Bar Review: Thin-Crust Pizza, Good Cocktails, And A Busy West Island Vibe

Bernies Pizza Martini Bar Review: Thin-Crust Pizza, Good Cocktails, And A Busy West Island Vibe

I’m usually more of a thick-crust pizza person. Give me a satisfying crust and I’m happy. But that doesn’t mean thin-crust pizza can’t win me over. Good pizza is good pizza, and one of the most overlooked parts of any pizza is the dough. So I have to hand it to Bernies Pizza Martini Bar who got it right, even without the thick dough. Bernies is a busy, lively spot built around pizza, cocktails, and a night-out kind of atmosphere. The pizza leans thinner than what I usually gravitate toward, but it works. The crust has enough flavour and structure to make the pizza satisfying, and the toppings do their job without turning the whole thing into a sloppy mess. It’s not my default pizza style, but I enjoyed it.

Good Pizza Starts With The Dough

The more I think about pizza, the more I think the dough separates good pizza from forgettable pizza. A while back, I made pizza from scratch at home with a friend of mine who’s a fantastic cook. She loves teaching me about food and showing me the little tips and tricks that most of us don’t think about when we just order something and eat it. One day, we made pizza. And for homemade pizza, it was delicious. Like seriously, it was so good that I was stupefied.  That experience changed how I look at pizza restaurants. Because if I can make tasty pizza at home, then what’s the excuse for restaurants serving boring, lazy, forgettable pizza?

There are so many places that seem to settle for “good enough.” Not terrible. Not great. Just enough to satisfy most people and keep the tables moving. Someone recently told me something that really stuck: A lot of restaurants aren’t necessarily trying to make the best food possible. They’re trying to make food that’s just acceptable enough for customers to come back. That may be true in all kinds of businesses, but I’d never really thought of it that way with restaurants.

When it comes to pizza, though, there’s no excuse. If homemade pizza can beat your restaurant pizza, there’s a problem.

Bernies Pizza Was Tasty

With that said, Bernies pizza was tasty. It was a little oily, but not in a way that ruined it. Some pizzas cross that line where the oil takes over and everything feels heavy. This didn’t feel like that. The pepperoni was also right where it should be. Not too spicy, not too bland, and most importantly, not cheap tasting. Bad pepperoni can ruin a pizza fast. Bernies avoided that problem.

The overall result was a pizza that tasted like someone cared enough to make it enjoyable, not just passable. That should be the minimum, but unfortunately, it isn’t always the case.

The Thin-Crust Style Works Here

Even though I usually prefer a thicker crust, Bernies thin-crust style makes sense for the restaurant. This isn’t a heavy, old-school, fall-asleep-after-two-slices kind of pizza. It’s more of a social pizza. The kind you share at a table with drinks, conversation, and a room full of noise around you. That fits the vibe.

The pizza feels like part of the night out, not just the food you order because you need dinner. It’s easy to eat and share, and good enough to keep reaching for another piece.

The Room Is Busy, Loud, And A Little Tight

Bernies is a crowded, loud restaurant with barely enough room to move. It’s a social kind of restaurant that’s busy and you feel it as soon as you walk in. That can be good or bad depending on what kind of night you want.

As a date restaurant, it works if you want energy. It has that lively, slightly packed, everyone’s-out-having-a-good-time feeling. But if you’re looking for a calm, intimate, quiet meal, this may not be the place.

It also works well as a friends’ night spot. You can see why people would come here to hang out, eat pizza, have cocktails, and make a night of it.

The atmosphere is part of the appeal, but it’s worth knowing before you go. Bernies isn’t spacious and relaxed. It’s fun, tight, and busy.

The Cocktails Are Worth Mentioning

Bernies isn’t just a pizza place. The cocktails are a real part of the experience. I don’t drink much alcohol, but when I do, I usually want a cocktail. That’s how I tend to judge bars and restaurants with a drink menu. If the cocktails feel lazy, thrown together, or just plain sucks, I notice.

At Bernies, the cocktails were good. There were worthwhile options, and the drinks felt like they belonged to the concept rather than being an afterthought. That matters, especially for a restaurant that’s clearly trying to be more than just a casual pizza stop.

Pizza and cocktails can be a great combination when both sides are taken seriously. Bernies does a good job with that.

A Good Night Out In Dollard

Bernies Pizza Martini Bar is a welcome addition to the West Island dining scene. Bernies is located on Sources Boulevard in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, making it an easy West Island option for anyone looking for a lively pizza spot with good drinks.

Would I go back? Yes. And to be clear, I already have.
