Energy Drinks: Ingredients & Dangers

Since the 1990s, energy drinks have gone from being the latest craze and fad to a permanent fixture in our culture. Given the various seemingly exotic ingredients, here’s a general introduction to the various energy drink dangers and advantages. I won’t go into great biological detail since you could probably write a book about the energy drink craze. Instead I’ll provide you with some information that should let you be a more informed consumer when it comes to energy drinks.

What are Energy Drinks?
An energy drink is a beverage that contains some form of legal stimulant and/or vitamins which are meant to give consumers a short term boost in energy.

The “Magical” Ingredients
In general, these drinks have one thing in common: They all contain a lot of sugar and/or caffeine. These could be considered the “active ingredients.” So before you go bragging about how powerful a certain drink was and how its natural ingredients helped you wake up in the morning or dance all night, consider that you probably got more of a sugar rush than anything else.

Energy Drinks & Marketing
The “thing” about energy drinks is that they are marketed as being all-natural energy boosters loaded with exotic ingredients that popular culture believes to be healthy. Energy drinks are generally marketed towards younger crowds, especially those who go to raves. People are buying energy drinks in record numbers, even at an incredible $2-3 for a can smaller than an average soft drink can. Just FYI, the energy drink industry is worth over a billion dollars in sales annually. Note that Red Bull energy drink leads the way. While Red Bull may have lame TV commercials, energy drinks tend to have cool logo colors and fonts, modern can or bottle shapes, and a “high energy” feel surrounding them. It’s a marketing company’s dream come true!

The Dangers of Energy Drinks: Side Effects & Long-term Effects
I’m just scratching the surface with what I have written here so let me give you some food for thought. When you are considering consuming energy drinks:

  • Make a mental note that while the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is allowing companies to sell and market their energy drink products, there is still very little research that has been done on them. I suspect the FDA allows them to be added simply because they do not pose any immediate danger to energy drink consumers.
  • The long-term effects of energy drink ingredients, if any, are still not known meaning that drinking a lot of these drinks on a consistent basis may or may not harm you in ways that have yet to be researched.
  • Energy drink labels are frequently misleading or at least they are so ambiguous that when you buy them you simply believe what you want to believe. Remember that in most cases, the claims being made have not been proven.
  • It remains unknown as to whether any medical conditions and related prescription medication will interact with energy drinks. If you try an energy drink and react poorly to it, consult a physician.

Body Chemistry
Energy drinks all try to stimulate something in your body that leads to your awakening and feeling as though you have more energy. One big mistake that most people make is that energy drinks will have the same effect on them, regardless of the choice of drink, and ignoring an individual’s unique body chemical make-up.

Think about it this way: We know that alcohol has a unique effect on everyone who consumes it (some people get drunk faster, have different allergic reactions to alcohol, etc), so there is no reason to believe that these drinks will have a different result among various consumers.

Sugar
Many raves don’t sell alcohol but in fact focus on water and energy drink sales. While gaining energy from sugar in and of itself is not such a bad thing, be warned that drinking lots of sugar can make you feel full. Carbonation, which can come from soft drinks as well, also makes you feel full. Ravers who become ill frequently keep dancing or remain active, and fail to re-hydrate as they should, in part because they think they’re full. What ends up happening is that their body shuts down due to the lack of fluids, and they collapse.

Are Energy Drinks Addictive?
Since consumption of energy drinks is so prevalent among youth and frequently associated with raves and the nightclub scene, many wonder about their addictive properties. In fact, the only truly addictive part of energy drink ingredients appears to be caffeine. So if you drink enough cans, you may become addicted to caffeine and ultimately suffer from the effects of the addiction.

Energy Drinks, Alcohol & Death
Bars around the world mix vodka with energy drinks, especially Red Bull. This is mixing a depressant (alcohol) with a stimulant (the energy drink). This can have an effect on your heart and claims have been made that this combination has led to death. As such, some countries in Europe have banned Red Bull and other energy drinks.

Creatine
SoBe is a popular drink. It contains creatine in such minute amounts that it probably doesn’t have any effect. Same with Ginko.

Taurine
The peculiar thing about taurine is that nobody really knows what it does! There is apparently no evidence that it has any major influence but it is possible that it does indeed have some effect on the body which leads to the feeling of having more energy.

Taurine & Caffeine are Key
One must also account for the mixed effects of the different energy drink ingredients. Consider that drinking different types of alcohol during a night of partying can leave you with an awful hangover. (Of course, you could try the anti-hangover pill). In an energy drink such as Guru for example, it is possible that the taurine enhances the effects of caffeine, giving you a slightly larger boost than if you had drank only one of the ingredients. This is just a theory however since it has yet to be scientifically tested.

Vitamins
Some energy drinks offer a variety of vitamins. It’s important to note that your body will take what it needs and pee off the extra vitamins. So this isn’t a major health booster.

Popular Terms
The most popular energy drinks include Red Bull, Monster, XS (get it – excess), Boost, Crunk, Rockstar, Crunk Juice, Full Throttle, Spark, Amp , Rush, SoBe, Pimp Juice, Shark, Piranha, Red Line, Bookoo, Socko, Fuze, Hype, Guru, and Atomic X.

Update
This Citynet Magazine exclusive article was published in 2004 and since then, a lot of email has come in, mostly from parents who were desperate to get information on energy drinks. In most cases, their children were in the hospital or at least at home with severe issues related to energy drinks. Based on these emails, it would appear that the actual number of people suffering from the adverse effects of these drinks is larger than might be gathered from hospital reports.

Comments? Feedback?
If you have any insight into energy drinks, their ingredients, and the validity of studies related to the various ingredients, I’d love to hear them. The beauty of the Internet is that knowledge can grow right here as new info comes in.

I have drank the energy drink full throttle for at least 2 years, usually about 3 a day, and in the last 6 months I have encountered SEVERE joint and muscle pain. The pain was so intense that I had to see a doctor who advised me there were no signs of any damage from the exrays and mri. A family member asked me to cut out the drink and see what would happen.

Well I have not drank it for over 2 weeeks and the joint pain is GONE….It didn’t happen overnight but the pain gradually became weaker and not lasting for days but only hours. I have had 5 days of absolutely no pain and it looks like the reason for the pain was the energy drink. I was just inquiring if you had heard anyone else having this happen to them.

I have been drinking energy drinks for a few years now. More now as my life has gotten busier. I have noticed when I drink on an empty stomach, and then do nothing afterwards. The drink ends up upsetting my stomach. I am not sure what may cause this, or if this is helpful in anyway as what may other effects may be on energy drinks. Just sharing my personal experience.

Thanks soooo very much for the article on the harmful effects of the energy drinks that my daughter is consuming.

We thought she was developing some sort of split personality, but based on the times when she drinks these beverages, to when she “comes down” from the rush, I have now figured out what’s been going on.

Anyway, the boyfriend, has her hooked on these drinks. I don’t see much difference between these drinks and taking something like No-doze, or the other uppers that my age group took during our college years…mid eighties…no ages please… :o)

Some days she is so miserable, and has been having acute insomnia for months…

Thanks again, my burgeoning nurse WILL sit down and read your article and the 2 others that I found that support it.

    Sincerely
A Mom in Pennsylvania who is losing her mind…

i have been looking up some info since wed thats how i came about ure article.. Let me tell you my story and maybe you can give me some feed back. I was ordered to take a drug test (urine) on wednesday and well when the judge received the test i was informed that i had failed. Well let me tell you i dont use drugs so i was shocked.

My lawyer and I sat down and tried to figure out exactly what i have been intaking for it to show up positive for methamphetemines (how ever u spell it). I had gone over that i had been taking a prescribtion of prednisone but that wasnt the answere, so she continued any cold meds ? my answere no. any diet pills ? no BUT i do drink RED BUll almost every day.. She doubted red bull would make my test positive.. i asked my family doctor about it and he said possibly so here i am i googled red bull and meth tons of articles came up about it being a liquid meth also i saw something about taurine in energy drinks so I googled taurine and meth and I came to a site wikiansweres.com apperently someone else failed for meth and had asked if taurine was the cause and they received an aswere yes.. hope this might help ure article and maybe if u find any more info about red bull and meth PLEASE let me know.

I’ve been an energy drink addict for a few years now. Mostly Monster and NOS. After drinking a few of them last weekend I had to go to the hosptial because my back was in such bad pain that it accualy caused me to vomit. I went to the hosptial and they gave me a shot of muscle relaxer. A friend’s mom (who is a nurse) suggested that it my be the enegry drinks I was consuming causing my kidneys to swell therefore putting extra stress on my back. And like this article states I didn’t believe her as there is no proof to long term effects. Nor short term that I have found. However today I drank down 2 bottles of NOS 600ML each and I had to leave work early with the same pain from last weekend. I’m hoping that i have not done any long term effects to my body. But I hope someone reads this before something like this happens to them.

To back up your statement, YES energy drinks can show up as METH. There is a UFC Fighter (Sadly can’t remember his name) On the fight network. that was saying By drinking redbull before a urine test it will show as a meth. Another danger.

I regularly drink energy drinks and while I was working in a club here in Vegas last year, I was taking to some guy that work for one of the major ones (hint: color – male cow) after they had a few cocktails they started to fill me in that for every can (small) you drink you should drink a least 16 oz of water to flush it out and keep your self hydrated. Just FYI.

BTW ever notice that your urine changes color after drinking certain Energy Drinks.. that can not be a good thing.

  8. Justin |

As with anything if you drink too much of something then yes it can cause damage. The term moderation is key to anything… One energy drink every 2 or 3 days isn’t going to hurt you, but 2-3 a day for years then is just plain ignorant. And about failing drug tests before things, I have drank red bull with many smoothies and many other drinks with taurine in it and I passed my drug test for my job, and I guarantee you that if anyone would have failed it due to energy drinks i would have, but didn’t. The other thing is that if you have taken any over the counter weight loss pill there would be your answer to failing drug test. The only KNOWN ENERGY DRINK to have any trace of anything and it is a very SMALL trace is in the R** B**l w cola. So remember MODERATION. Be safe.

Drink sugar free energy drinks and all of you will avoid half the problems you are having. The FDA has no limits or regulations in place for energy drinks when it comes to legal ingredients such as sugar, caffeine, taurine, etc… If you notice there is no amount of caffeine listed on the side of the cans. This is because there is a massive amount and it is not regulated like, coke and pepsi. Energy drinks fall into their own category when it comes to the FDA. The rules are different. If you want to avoid the joint pains, the back pains, the mood changes, and all the adverse side effects I am reading about here, then switch to sugar free energy drinks. There is no meth in energy drinks whatsoever, that is just a silly myth. If there was meth in energy drinks you would have known about it a loooooong time ago. The media would have ate that up. HEADLINES- Energy drink Red Bull distributes meth to children in the form of an energy drink. If you failed a drug test I would look outside of the energy drink category to find your answer. My advice ask for a retest and submit a hair sample instead of urine. A hair sample is a more extensive test and will probably cost you but it is a more exact science. They can trace drugs very far back and establish a timeline of what you took and when you took it. If you did take drugs and dont want anybody to know then dont give a hair sample because you will fail.

The AMP energy drink does not have as much sugar and caffeine as the others. I find that AMP can be useful, but I wouldn’t suggest drinking it 24/7. I drink it on occasions, there is nothing wrong with it once and a while.

  11. Jennifer |

I drink energy drinks sporadically. Actually, the whole reason I started drinking them was that my schedule suddenly changed from me starting work at 4pm to starting work at 8am. My sleep schedule was off and I was left feeling very tired in the mornings. I started drinking Amp energy drinks. Honestly, they made it a lot easier to get through the day. However, I noticed the effect of how it makes you feel full. I realized that I was not drinking any water during the rest of the day because I wasn’t thirsty.

So then I tried a 5 Hour Energy. At least it didn’t have a ton of sugar. It was smaller and didn’t give me that full feeling. It works sometimes, but not every time. The effects of Amp also began to sometimes work and sometimes not. I think either I was too tired for the drinks to help, or I was building some sort of resistance, at least to the caffeine part.

Also, drinking Amp on an empty stomach makes me feel a little sick. Drinking 5 Hour Energy on an empty stomach makes me feel sick much later as my body tries to digest the stuff.

For a while, I took a caffeine pill every now and again. Actually I only took half of one, because a whole pill made me feel very strange and unpleasant. My head would be buzzing and would nearly set off a panic attack. Amp and 5 Hour Energy at least did not have those effects on me. Perhaps because they are not just caffeine? I don’t know.

Energy drinks work if you drink them once in a while. They don’t affect my personality. But they do sometimes make me feel sick. They do make me feel full so I end up not drinking water. They also don’t work every single time.

  12. James |

Wow, great article! It has always amazed me at people drinking those things at parties or at the club, and I’ve always wondered if there would be any side effects. Thanks for the info, sounds like others need it too! There are alternatives to the current “energy drink” market.

    Hi,
Attempting to write a term paper on energy drinks for a college class, and in searching the web came upon this. My class is US food laws and regulations and many people have told me there is not enough info to write a term paper on this subject. Being a stuborn and determined person… I am still going forward with the paper. If any one has information that will help me in my direction it would greatly be appericated.

I have been drinking red bulls and rockstarts for a few years now usually 2 in the morning. Anyhow I am also bi polar documented receive ssi benefits for this and I am on meds. Well when I went to see my doctor the other day he told me I have something called taurine toxicity syndrome which is still a lot of tests being done but there is medical research that shows on animals who were tested that bi polar are more at risk to have side effects from use of traurine products. I have leg pain and numbeness in legs and lower back as well as i have a constant feeling of off balance and have to sit down because I am afraid of falling. The doctor told me I have nervous system damage and that in a few days i will spend a night in the hospital so they can do some more tests. Anyways read up on it it google taurine and side effects and dangers.

A friend of mine recently introduced me to an all-natural energy drink. Some energy drinks usually have no fruit juice at all.

  18. Jeremy |

For approximately two to three years, I drank energy drinks on a regular basis; one a day, every second day or so, depending. I also ingested a large amount of sugar along with these energy drinks; about 20 dollars worth, the same days I regularly drank energy drinks.

The problem started after a particularly unsettling event (which I will keep personal, but suffice it to say it caused major mental trauma), after which I binged on sugar and energy drinks (Commonly Full Throttle and Red Rain) for two months straight, upping the dose to two and a half cans per day.

The effect of this was that now, whenever I ingest an energy drink, my stomach begins to hurt, and I have rapid bowel movements. Two energy drinks, and it’s an effective enema. I haven’t experienced this with any common soda products with caffeine in them, and the sugar may have just been an added factor. I believe this could be my body’s way of treating certain chemicals as a poison, and shunting them out.

    Any other ideas about this?

  19. Betty K. |

Darice, I don’t want to even put the name of my energy drink in with these others. But if you want to contact me, I will be glad to tell you and also give you additional information for your term paper. If you email me, please put “Term Paper” in the subject line…

I am an amateur bodybuilder. I don’t smoke, do drugs, drink alcohol and i am on a strict diet. These energy drinks (even the sugar free) are bad news. Pepsi’s (No Fear) sugar free was my drink of choice. But just like any other drug it feels good at first and you keep doing more and you don’t even realise that the reason you feel like crap is because of the drug. I learned pretty quick that if you drink one of these things before you lift weights it will ruin your workout. Your heart will be beating so fast that you have to sit. I am in iron man condition and to be sidelined by a drink is un-nerving. I will not be drinking anymore energy drinks, myself. But this is much bigger than me. These things need to be banned along with cigarettes. Just my opinion.

  21. Greg |

What about efusjon? I would really like some opinions about this energy drink. I have been drinking this energy drink for weeks now.

I have an 18 year old nephew who has been consuming large amounts of NOS and Red Bull and a couple of other energy drinks. He has been doing possibly 4 to 6 cans a day. His personality has changed dramactically. He has gone from a shy, quiet young man, to a loudmouthed time bomb. He can’t be reasoned with in any way. All problems with him are someone elses fault. He can’t carry on a normal conversation because of his loud to shouting voice, and sometimes he doesn’t realize he is doing it. We are at the end of our patience with him, and do not know what to do. He does not see any problem with the way he does. The younger children are afraid to be around him. Any help or ideas on this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening.

Great info with the ingredients. Energy drinks – terribly misnamed, are one of the nastiest things one can put in the body.

  24. clampulp |

I’m going for a bet that requires me to drink 16 monster energy drinks within 24 hours. Will it potentially do a lot of damage to me?

  25. Wes |

If you drink a lot of energy drinks in one short period of time you will overload your organs causing them to shut down causing severe damage and death.
There are reports out already where many young adults (14-25) have died from as few as 4 Red Bull. Do you think its wise to push the limit to anything more than one per day?

Overloads of Vitamin B-6 cause severe nerve damage to the extremities (fingers & Toes) Vitamin B-12 overdose causes central nervous system disorders and liver damage. There are already children waiting for liver transplants from drinking to many energy drinks.
Anything sweetened with sucralose is also going to cause severe kidney issues as this form of sweetener is nothing more than DDT a very damaging toxin to the human body. Run as fast as you can from anything with this sweetener. DDT is a poison and always has been. Why is it showing up in our food? Because the FDA only requires that the label be on the package, not that the ingredients are in the product. They don’t even care if the ingredients are harmful. Any doubts, checkout the other poison that is in our food supply making everyone sick called ASPARTAME. This poison has a very bad track record, every lab rat that was given aspartame died from a cancerous brain tumor. And yet the FDA lets them put that in our food supply every day. If your product says sugar free of diet it contains aspartame.
Google this information and find out for yourself. You will see why our children are getting diseases at such an early age. We as adults are poisioning our own children and this must stop….not tomorrow but today!

I been drinking energy drinks for at least 5 years once a day. Now I’ve been experiencing lower back pain and sometimes if i haven”t had anything to eat i have stomach pains. After reading above i do believe the cause is the energy drinks cause i’ve been to chiropractors and they do nothing to make it better unless i use a muscle relaxer. Then back feels okay again. I will stop using energy drinks and see if there is a difference. Any feedback would be appreciated. Anyone have same symptoms?

  27. Nate |

Your best bet to scare yourself away from these drinks is to research each and every ingredient on the labels. You will scare yourself to death when you read what those ingredients do to us, and where they come from. These companies should be held accountable for marketing this poison.

  28. karen |

What are the mental effects of these drinks. Can a person get so changed in their personality that they might complete suicide? Are there any studies on this topic?

  29. Dyanne |

I want to say a big thank you for this article, it has opened my eyes. I have been told for months by friends to stop drinking amp and red bull and I laughed it off but after reading this article and these comments (that I can actually relate to) I will stop drinking them after today. I have had pain in my lower back and side, as well as pains in my chest. I already have knee and joint problems but now I see this could make it worse. For all of you still doubting that the energy drink is the problem, God bless you!!

  30. Anna |

I have had the same problems. Significant knee pain and nerve problems including sciatica, mood swings, changing personality on come-downs etc.. I have ADHD and if other people are talking about joint pains and stuff, then I believe that they are related. I didn’t know that stuff about B-vitamins either. I’ve also been taking valium sometimes too, because it relaxes me. But then I get very depressed. I’ve been up and down and all around with my moods. I have noticed that I really want the valium when I take the energy drinks, but I avoided thinking about it because I wanted to keep drinking them. I also have a perpetual tick in my lower eyelid when I drink the drinks and for the next few days.

  31. shadow |

I drink one can of energy drink every day at the beginning of the evening, b/c by then I am tired from the day and need the lift for the evening of domestic duties. But now I wonder whether the energy drink could be the cause of the tiredness? I don’t have any trouble getting to sleep, but perhaps the caffeine and guarana impact on having a deep and restful sleep? does anyone know if that could be an effect of those ingerdients?

  32. confused |

Umm I have a question… how many energy drinks do you need to have before it makes you pass out? Someone said they had 6 cans of rockstar and it knocked them out and they woke up in hospital but I don’t believe them… can anyone help me with this? It would be much appreciated.

  33. Blu |

I drink 3 monster energy drinks in the morning. two at lunch, one after I get home and 1 after dinner. I get no side affects. I just feel more awake. I do think that I am addicted to them… but since they have not been affecting my health, and it has been almost a year now. I don’t mind. It’s just a part of my life now and they taste good!!!

  34. Jessica |

I have never had an energy drink before and my friends keep on saying I need to have one but I’m not sure if it will do anything bad to my body, so can I have some advice? Thank you :)

  35. steve |

Please, whatever you do don’t ever get drunk off of alcohol energy drinks. I did last night and am having one of the worst days ever. I feel dizzy for hours and am still feeling dizzy as I am writing this. I feel like I’m going to pass out but I feel like this for hours. This is not a pure alcohol hangover because I know what those feel like that and this is something else. This is some kind of horrible crash that goes on for hours and hours and hours and you can’t sleep the alcohol off because your so wired. Really bad combination. STAY AWAY FROM ALCOHOL ENERGY DRINKS.

  36. John |

All I can say is be careful. Not only can these affect your joints and kidneys but it can do a number on your heart. Also, the sugar content in these absolutely destroys your teeth if you’re not careful. You’ve seen what coke can do to a penny, just imagine what this is doing to your teeth.

I have been drinking Monster XXL ever since I had my first child, almost 6 years ago. I drink AT LEAST one a day, sometimes 2, the most being 3. XXL is a 24 oz can, so I usually drink one in the morning and sometimes continue after lunch. I DO find myself wanting another one on some days just because they are so good! I am addicted. I remember when I first started drinking them, I drank the regular size ones and they use to make me grind my teeth! I knew they were powerful back then and then they came out with the XXL and they definitely woke me up! They also suppressed my appetite and I lost ALL the baby weight. Everyone asked me how I lost the weight, and it was because I didn’t eat breakfast anymore, only Monster. 6 years later, I have spent THOUSANDS on monster drinks and do get in bad moods when I am very tired and can’t afford to get one. I have even taken change many times to buy one!! (the taste is addicting, as well as the caffeine, plus I think it has become a daily habit that is hard to break). There are days I try not to have one, but I usually break down and have one later in the day or the very next day. I have not seen ANY side effects except for the actual addiction.

Even when I see a Monster and I am wide awake, I always want another one! My brother was telling me about some of the side effects he had heard about and encouraged me to research it myself, thus here I am. I HIGHLY doubt there are traces of meth or even the false results of it on a drug test because I don’t do drugs and have been drinking minimum 24oz a DAY and have NEVER failed a drug test. But then again, that’s Monster energy drinks.

I have never really liked the taste of any other energy drinks, although my husband says NOS is even more powerful than Monster. (?) When I’m trying to drink something else in substitution of Monster, I have found that Mountain Dew is a good one. They are also the same creators of both drinks.

Any experts out there who might explain why a racehorse who has had no medication apart from a cattle wormer (and you could be eating that cow 14 days after being given it!) would test positive for pemoline? The staff looking after the two horses drink lucozade and red bull and other high energy drinks. Is there a link? At my wits end.

  39. Yeah Right |

Will some of you actually read what you are posting before you his the “Send Comment” button? Man, “I drink 2-4 Monsters a day and I….” or “I drink them everyday for breakfast and more later…”. That is the problem. Sure, the sugar containing Energy Drinks (ED’s) are not going to be good for you if you use them unmoderated. DUH!!! Same goes for soda pop, coffee, alcohol, or anything else. I have used the sugar free monsters and Rock Stars for YEARS prior to running, martial arts, kickboxing, or anything else that requires heavy cardio and am healthy as a horse (doctor verified).

If you are just drinking these things and sitting on your butt or even just for the average day, you should liken it to flooring the accelerator pedal of your car while in park or neutral. That is in effect what you are doing to your bodies by just drinking them casually. If you are feeling really tired for no reason and that is why you want an ED, then go to the doctor and have them check you for Hypothyroidism and sugar diabetes. Hypothyroidism is one of the most undiagnosed diseases and the cause of many people’s lack of energy and bad sense of well being as it also causes bad depression and in some cases, sexual dysfunction.

Another factor why most of you people are feeling like crap is that I would bet my arm that you don’t drink enough (if any) water! For every soda or coffee you drink during the day, you should be drinking at least that much water (1:1 ratio). Caffiene is a diuretic. Your need to stay hydrated. Dehydration is also the cause of many aches and pains in your joints and muscles. If you do not have enough water intake, your muscles lose elasticity and it can even cause headaches. Toss in a ciggarette habit and VIOLA! There you go!

  40. Homechicken |

What about the “new wave” of so-called healthy energy drinks? Seems like a great alternative for anyone wanting to make sure they or their family are consuming a much healthier alternative to Red Bull, etc. Thoughts?

  41. Crystal |

Wow… after reading all these posts, I remembered that I had the worst neck-spine pain I’ve ever heard of for a month straight. Two weeks before that pain, I had switched from cans of Pepsi to 2 or 3 cans of an energy drink each day. I have been low on money lately (and every one knows 1 can pepsi=.75 vs. 1 can Energy= 2.95) so I went back to Pepsi. THREE DAYS LATER… my pain is gone. Note: I have been drinking ED’s for 2 years, but never a hundred in one month like when the spine muscle pain happened.

  42. vycktor |

I drank 6 monster every day last year, at the end of the year, I passed out in a diabetic coma. When I started, I had no previous medical problems.

  43. Britt |

Haha, I just read this while drinking a Rockstar.
I always drink an average of two Red Bulls a day or one Rockstar or Monster, plus 2 cups of coffee in the morning and a can of diet Pepsi in the afternoon. I’ve never experienced any ill effects in the last few months besides the extreme caffeine addiction. I do drink at least 3 bottles of Smartwater a day, so maybe that keeps me from cramping and such, as well as choosing some sugar-free drinks. I play sports and run 3 miles every other day, and I didn’t get the rapid heartbeat. I don’t believe for a second that meth is in energy drinks, because my friends and I would be dead.

Water can do a LOT of damage if you drink it all at once! You people need to get over it, you think energy drinks are causing mood swings in your teenagers guess what, They are TEENAGERS! Of course they have mood swings. Look I’ll admit I have expirienced lower backpain from Monster and clearly it is my kidneys, so you know what I did, I stopped drinking them! Wow problem solved.

Health problems can come from an array of things and I guarantee you that the main health problem to come from energy drinks is this magical little thing called dehydration. That is what caused my kidneys to hurt and I realized that while I was drinking energy drinks making myself drink water was difficult, so I freakin stopped! I hate it when people are looking for the next big excuse to why their children are moody.

I was a teenager once and now I am a member of the uniformed services and a good husband. When I was a kid I was a straight A student and naturally friendly. You wanna know why parents? Because I have good parents who didn’t pussy-foot around with stupid mood swings and treated me with respect and dignity, give that a shot and then you’ll see that energy drinks are just a good tasting super-soda if you want your kids to have an energy boost tell them they are doing a great job at something they wouldn’t expect you to care about like guitar or even a video game, it goes a long way. Most kids lose motivation because they feel that you don’t care about anything they do and therefore they find other ways to get that motivation back. Watch you children and appreciate thier talent, you’ll be amazed how much thier “attitude” changes.

I’ve been drinking energy drinks for years now, 1-3 a day, and I’ve never had any complaints. I guess excess amounts of just about ANYTHING will cause damage to your body.

  47. Liz |

I have been addicted to the drink Guru, drinking on average one a day, or every other day for the past two years. Sometimes other types of energy drinks as well. The drink itself claims to be organic and there is no caffeine or taurine added. Instead guarana, ginko, ginsing and echinacea make up the medicinal ingredients. It is also loaded with sugar.

I live a crazy busy life, and experience problems functioning without it at times. I have never experienced any side affects from it other than the fact that it makes me feel like a normal person. after reading all of these comments, i find it shocking and disgusting that it has become normal or standard for people to consume this stuff in such an irresponsible fashion. im also positive that the fatigue i experience is a result of my own choices.

I want to stop drinking this junk and take responsibilty for how i feel. i would like to detox, eat properly and take better care of myself in general. After reading this stuff, it seems to me there is no better time than right now to start.

This is actually pretty funny. Almost 99% of the people on here on concerned with fighting other peoples battles. Hey, it’s bad for you just like anything else is. Cigarettes, Coffee, Drugs, etc. If you do anything, ANYTHING, excessively, then yeah, it’s going to eventually hurt you in the long run but that doesn’t mean there has to be millions of articles floating about saying how “horrible” (Insert the next rediculously over-dramatized object here) is. You could make a world-wide anouncement on the dangers of cigarettes and there would still be a million people buying them everyday. People will do what people want and only the law can stop them.

And to those of you who are putting comments like, “Oh I drink 1-2 in the morning and then another after lunch.” or “I’ve been drinking 4 a day for years.” Well, DUH! Obviously it’s going to have an adverse effect, you’re over-dosing on energy drinks! Having 1 every other day isn’t going to hurt you. Yeah, you shouldn’t over do it but that’s the same with anything! Even too much water is bad for you. You guys just need to calm down, take a step back, and think about what this article is really telling you. Of course it’s bad to drink 4 energy drinks EVERYDAY for YEARS. LEARN TO THINK FOR YOURSELVES!

Wow these articles sure explain a lot about what ed does to you I’ve been drinking ed for a year 1-4 a day I haven’t had these side affects I work out I do martial arts maybe people getting join back aches because people don’t get there lazy butts up and do something also hardly enough water simple task to get rid of the pains drink more water and less ed

  51. TracyG |

Too many posts on this page sound like typical drug addicts “yeah I use such’n’such drug but I’m NOT a drug addict, it doesn’t affect me”. Addicts will always defend their drug of choice. Ok, so you drink umpteen cans of ED, you get to sail through your busy life much easier, you’re still sleeping at night, you aren’t suffering aches and pains and you haven’t had a heart attack or renal failure or anything else. But what about your general behaviour?

And before all you ED drinkers jump up and down screaming “I don’t act any differently”…that’s exactly what EVERY ED drinker that does suffer behavioural changes screams out too, especially the teenagers

It’s fine in moderation if you don’t have any side effects. And yes, as stated earlier, teenagers are teenagers and many typically have mood swings anyways. But what of those whose mood swings are worsened by consumption of EDs. More severe mood swings, stupid errors in judgement, hyperactivity, depression from the downer after the energy boost wears off

You can advise and inform an adult and the choices they make after that is their choice, choices to be respected. If you don’t like their choice or the effect anything has on them, you can stay away from them. Parents don’t get that choice with their own kids who are being adversely effected by these so called glorious energy drinks though. You can’t tell a teenager, they know everything

But it seems the adverse effects outnumber the positive effects of these legal drugs and since there is no way of governing who they are sold to (as in age limits, etc), more countries should follow those who have already banned them. Majority should prove enough

What happened to taking a nap to help when you are tired and working hard to build muscle mass. Why do we always have to put something in our body to try and get ahead quick? A very bad habit for young people to get into!

  53. Victim |

Im a victim to energy drinks. I was dumb enough to drink the 32oz monster drink called heavy metal one day.. That same night I started get very bad cold chills shaking cold sweats hear pounding numbness to my face and sharp shooting pain through my left arm including sharp stabing pain to the chest. Two yrs later I still get the symptoms but now I got twitching in my neck and at time I wont eat for a few days.. I wake up misserable and go to sleep the same. I was told my heart was fine from a cardiologist. So Im guessing my nerves are really screwed up. Im 22 and have to stay away from all caffeine, Roller Coasters, Basket ball, Base Ball, Anything athletic even working out. All of that must be avoided so I wont trigger an even worst attack. I feel like I got no where to go because no one knows what to do and whats wrong.. It suck’s, I also get very bad head aches and when attempting to do sports my chest starts to hurt throat closes up on me and I get close to collapse.

Any help with this would be appreciated ALOT

I used to drink Monster Energy Drink about 2 times a week, until a few days ago I when started to notice an itch on my right elbow, I figured it was just a normal itch, and I scratched it, and it was gone for a while.

But then two days later it came back.
I called 911 and told them I had been drinking Monster Energy Drink a few times a week, they sent an ambulance right away and I was treated for Placeboitis, the surgeon said I was lucky to be alive, and that all they had to do is remove the critical thinking part of my brain, luckily they said it was of no use to me and apparently I had never used it before.

I wish I had read this article before I went though all of that, it would’ve saved me a lot of time and money.

  55. Shawn |

I used to drink monster energy as well as a few other energy drinks as I was working out 1 1/2 – 2 hrs a day. Got to the point that all I did was crash soooooo much bad stuff in those typical energy drinks.

Its all about moderation. I drink the low carb blue monsters because they have less surgar and I also drink five hour energy. I’ve experienced nights I can’t sleep if I intake too much but that’s because of the caffinee. I go to school and have long nights and I don’t like coffee which is why I drink them. I’ve had no bad side effects but also don’t drink them every single day, just as needed. Of you feel like you her headaches its because your hooked on caffinee, ever tried to quit smoking? The best energy booster is to stay in shape, eat fruits and other foods good for you. Yall that drink 2-3 a day is too much, think about that with other drinks, that’s like a cube of beer every week. Too much of anything will make you sick hence a hangover, if you must indulge in these drinks drink water also, like when you drink a Gatorade you drink a glass of water to equal the amount of ounes consumed in Gatorade. So if you drink a 16 oz energy drink, drink 16 oz of water at least to keep your kidneys and liver from overworking. Hope tall start intake in moderation,
    Dean,
    Us army medic.

I drink energy drinks quiet a bit since i have trouble with my sleep which can only really be solved by taking another sleeping drug which seems to have worseside effects than the drinks. I don’t take it very often i usually judge wether i need it at a certain part of my day (usually around 1-2 whilst I’m at school) to keep concentrating (my attention seems to be dwindling more more).

I only really have it once a week so what I know about it may be wrong. I don’t seem to feel any adverse effects whilst I’m feeling the sugar rush except being a bit more sociable and i notice i find it easier to grab peoples attention too whilst i have it (I’m a quiet person but not so much so when i have a sugar rush).

Physically I can run about 150-200 meters and it doesn’t feel all too heavy, but saying that I do have quite a lot of muscular endurance compared to most of the people in my school and since I’m not so athletic maybe I’d be able to do that without the energy drink and it could just be a placebo.

So in my experience I find it does give the ddersired “energy” and also makes me a bit louder in my body language, so i suppose it does have some pyschological effects too.

btw one thing I’ve notices is after the rush i do feel as if though i need a bit more, I’ve had this even when i first started drinking them but usualy a bit of plain water or juice settles this urge.

  60. Arfan Araf |

BTW John I’m curious to what your surgeon seems to be telling you about Placeboitis. You do realize that a placebo is you think theres something wrong with you or you think that something you have taken is giving you an rush or affecting when infact, it isn’t.

I think maybe that surgeon was joking with you and maybe his voice is so bland you might not have picked up. There is no such condition as placeboitits and the critical thinking part of your brain.

I have experienced side effects of drinking Energy Drinks. I was big on Rockstar and I drank 2-4 a day, but after a while I started getting intense pain in my lower adomin (like my kidnys or something) while urinating.

So this one time I was in a mall and decided to buy a NOS energy drink.. you know, the one in the blue bottle that looks like a butane canister. Haha. And yeah.. 15 minutes later I was still in the mall and ended up vomiting it all up, all over the potted plant beside the bench i was sitting on, next to the restrooms and coke machine. It was slightly embarrassing, there were people walking by shooting awkward glances or pretending not to notice… but for some reason i didn’t really care, i just wanted it OUT of my system. I have never bought a NOS energy drink since that day, and that was my first one.

  63. michael |

ok so i drink red bull and i prob do drink to many of them but the only side effects i have noticed on myself is if i dont keep myself motivated or doing something while i drink them or after is that i feel jittery like i just pounded like 4 cups of coffee but if i stay doing something i feel fine i read all these posts on here and i think your all crazy i have been doing alot of research about red bull not the other ones cause i dont like any other kind only red bull ive really heard it all now if your having effects like the ones posted here im guessing you were not in perfect health to begin with and then over did it i know i need to cut down on them and i do but it all depends on what im doing that day if i have a busy day playing with all 5 of my kids working hanging out with friends and then staying up late hanging out with my wife then yeah ill drink about 3 to 4 cans a day but if im having a lazy day and the kids are out i dont have to work then i drink my snapple or something with less caffine

  64. frankie |

I switched to the sugar free rockstar and monster a while back, they taste nasty but i needed the buzz to wake up. now i drink one and i don’t feel anything, which maean i got used to the caffine and need more. i can’t drink and of the energy juices cause that sends me to the restroom. i fell a twitch in my eyelid when i drink caffine rich drinks. i am really thinking of laying off these things all together, after 7yrs of drinking these thing i;m not so sure they are good for you in the long run. and beware of the drink called Spike, that one is the heart buster.

Alrighty. About these energy drinks, can they be addictive or not. I dont really know if this is being really addictive, but anyways. Im 17 years old now and i started to drink monster energy drinks at age of 13. I drank about 3-4 a day. I drank mostly all of them, 12oz, 24oz, and 32oz all by myself. Everyone told me im pretty crazy. Cause it was in every day thing.

Well years passed by still feel normal. Still drinkin monsters. Until March 9, 2010. I just bought 2 4packs of monsters and just 2 more. Took them to school. I drank one before school, drank one in every passing period before class and one last one after school. So all togather thats 9 monsters. During the classes my stomach started to hurt and i took a piss 3 times a period. I just told myself “I can deal with it”. So i did. Later on i got home from school, my stomach started to hurt and i started shake non-stop and heart started to beat faster and faster. I surprized i did’nt die, cause i heard that some kid died for drinkin 2 monsters and a 7up as well. Well anyway i still did’nt go to no hospital, but anyway after this day im still gonna drink energy drinks.

(Any advice to know about WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH ME or comments)…

I drink 2-3 Guava Rockstars a day. They taste great and I have a very busy schedule to keep up with, however, after drinking them for about two years now I have started having severe headaches at times.
Either from too much consumption or coming down off of them.
I really desire these drinks every day, but the shakes and other side
effects tells me this is a bad thing. If your not already hooked, avoid these products…..

Alot of thes post are pathetic you know that saying guns dont kill people but people kill people ,exactly everyone wants to blame something , grow up.did someone from the energy drink place come to your house and say hey lazy butt i know you live a pathetic life drink this drink or i will kill you ,NO they didnt , you chose to do it and if you cant handle caffien then dont drink it geeze.and the guy with the headaches its called caffien withdrawels just like anything that you over consume will give you some sort of side effect, Like that stupid girl that entered a water drinking contest and died for consuming to much water, flushed her electrolites right out of her body “WATER” its all about you not the product if you are scared of something or have any doubt in your mind the dont mess with it its that easy.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16614865/ and here is the link to that over drinking water death if you dont believe me

I have recently given up alcohol after drinking about $250 a week, now i really enjoy my energy drink (mother). when i go to a party i like to have a couple of cans to help be in party mode. I haven’t had any side affects apart from speedy heart beat. i think you need to drink water while your having your energy drink to help your body pass out the nasty stuff. If your going to have something i think your better off having an energy drink instead of drugs, but as anything you still need to consume in moderation. Enjoy.

  72. Concerned Parent |

I have reason to believe that energy drinks may have played a hugh part in the death of my son, age 19. We are still awaiting the cause of death but was told from the Medical Examiner it could go undetermied. Yes he had pot in his system but that does not kill. My son dropped to the ground and was gone in the matter of 2 seconds, had been to the movies with friends and was standing there talking to them when suddenly he passed away.
I hope I am wrong but after reading all the post, it makes me believe it is true more and more…… this needs to come off the market or at least post warnigs, we have 9 years children buying it, why not, it is sitting there beside the cokes and lemondaid.

The Long Term Impact of Energy Drinks

I am 60 years old and started drinking energy drinks about 5 years ago. After 2.5 years I began gradually developing symptoms similar to Sjogren’s. In fact I had been tentatively diagnosed as such. However, blood tests have proven that to be wrong.

I currently suffer from the following symptoms:

    · Dry/Burning Skin
    · Dry/Burning Mouth and Throat
    · Dry Eyes
    · Fatigue
    · Confusion and Memory Problems
    · Stomach pain and Nausea

Because of my age I feel like the Canary in the Coal Mine but I fear for those still drinking energy drinks. So, I want to relate my story.

Initially I was fine. I can remember drinking an energy drink and having no problems. Then I would drink one and my skin would burn after…not before and not from anything else. I can remember when I drank an energy drink and the burning did not go away but stayed and eventually got worse. I can remember when the dryness started in my mouth after drinking an energy drink but it would eventually go away. I remember when the dryness stopped going away and the aching in my gums started right after drinking an energy drink. Then the ache would go away. I can remember when the aching got so bad after drinking an energy drink that I finally had to stop and when I went to the dentist he had to give me a root canal. My gums had become infected because of the dryness

I was there when the wobbling started and I could barely stand up because, and I’m assuming here, my inner ear was so dry but when I quit drinking energy drinks my balance returned. But, like my skin and mouth and throat there was still dryness and I still had a problem with standing.

The ache in the gums, the dryness and burning in my mouth, throat and skin are all still with me and if I drank another energy drink the dryness would probably result in another gum infection and I would need another root canal.

You see there was a direct impact on my salivary and mucus glands from drinking Monster. I know because I was there. I watched it happen. Those glands have been destroyed in my body and have also impacted my stomach where in lies the pain. My body does not produce enough mucus to offset the digestive acids in my stomach and I currently endure pain and nausea every day. On a scale of 1-10 it’s been an 8 and I’ve been taking either Omeprazole or Nexium for over a year.

Now the aging process takes hold and of course things will only get worse. But I’m only one guy. What happens to all the other people who drink energy drinks and have the same problems?

I was wondering if anyone has had problems with their teeth or Gums when drinking Monster Energy Drinks. I love them. Especially in the morning because they wake me up, and get that terrible morning breath out better than anything else I’ve tried. Sometimes I will drink 2 a day yet I try to limit myself to one. I have quit 3 or 4 times over the past couple of years because (A) I have noticed my gums hurting to the point that I am talking to Dentists and Root Canal specialists and before I go ahead with any root canal work I remember that I am drinking a lot of Monster and I stop drinking it for a week or 2 and the pain seems to go away (NOTE: I assume this is due to all the sugar and the type of sugar they are using now… It is called Alcohol sugar and I assume it’s cheaper or it is absorbed into the body faster for a faster kick)…PS ..It really hit me how much I was drinking when I realized I was still drinking a monster when I went to the dentist appointment! (B) I have also noticed that I need sleeping pills when I drink them regularly and (C) I have many more trips to the bathroom when I am drinking them.
I know I know you’re probably saying why don’t you stop buying them …well I have this nice wife who likes to get me things I like, and she likes to shop. So life isn’t all bad. But seriously!!! Has anybody else out there experienced any teeth or gum problems with the energy drinks? Esp. Monster…
And to the mother who lost her son…I am sorry for your loss…but I have also noticed sever cramping when I work hard outdoors on a hot days. As the article above says …I forget to re-hydrate because the Energy Drinks keep me going so much I don’t see a need to re-hydrate. These are the most severe and regular cramps that I have ever received in my life. And I played college tennis and rarely cramped. It could be a mixture of the medicine I have to take and the Energy drinks and not the Energy drinks alone, I don’t know. One last thing I have found to be consistent on this subject is … Drs’ and Dentists are reluctant or ignorant on this subject. They are little or no help…except to say, “Maybe they may have too much sugar or caffeine!”
Thanks in advance … if anyone has had similar problems and would care to share them…
PSS…I am 52 yrs old and used to be very athletic.

    2nd Input I sent in at 2pm 4-17-2010
PSS…To Saber27! Regretfully I didn’t see your article until after I posted my first article. I don’t know how I missed it, but isn’t that just like life! You read and read and you miss the most important article because you have read too much.
Saber27 I really feel for you! I really appreciated your post and I will now swear off Monster (and other) energy drinks forever! I think I am having a very similar problem to your gum problems but because I am 8 years younger my body may be still able to repair the damage or because I quit before I get the root canal my saliva glands kick in just in the nick of time. I don’t know? But 18 months ago I wasn’t so lucky… and even though the oral surgeon wasn’t sure what was wrong with me, he still cut open my gum and cut off part of the root that he” thought” was infected. !Never did he look at it under a microscope or have tests run on it) That same surgeon has looked at me recently (I have been drinking monsters for 6 months regularly now) and although he couldn’t see anything wrong, he said he would be GLAD to perform a re-root canal to help me see if that is the problem! GLAD! Yea. I bet he’ll be glad to receive another $1500.00 bucks from me.

I had assumed it was the energy drinks for some time now. But after comparing your experiences to mine …now I am sure! No more Monsters for me….forever! One of the first things I started to notice was that I had a hard time swallowing sometimes…like there wasn’t enough moisture there. Another interesting thing is that the first tooth that starts hurting is always the one with the worst crown on it. This crown doesn’t come all the way down to the gum line! It cracks me up how all these dentists stick up for each other because when I bring this little issue up they always say …”well he didn’t do that bad of a job”, and “sometimes it’s better not to have the crown come all the way down to meet the gum”, and “although it’s not that bad , I’d be glad to replace it for you if you want”! Thanks but no thanks! There is one thing good about it though …It’s always the first one to start hurting when I start drinking the Monster “energy” drinks again! It’s my warning that something is wrong!
Our government has had a hands off approach to business for the last 8 years (2000-2009) and the FDA the SEC and the Mortgage industry regulators have been terribly understaffed to do the jobs that they were tasked to do to supposedly protect the public! So I guess it is up to us! I love this Pirate mentality (All for One attitude…). I have a root canal scheduled for 2 weeks from now. I have been off monsters for 3 days and already my gums are starting to feel better. I wish I would have researched this more completely before. Wish I’d seen your post sooner. But such is life. Who would have thought one of those strange ingredients that I had no idea of what they were, is actually the same thing that may be rotting the teeth of meth-heads and the government hasn’t had the staff to take a look at it. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if that’s what gives these “NEW” “ENERGY” drinks their special kick!
Saber27, like you I have also had stomach problems (I use Pepsid daily) and have had bladder problems like some of the others that have written in.
I hope that my body still has the ability to regenerate like it has in the past when I stopped drinking them in time. I can only hope that your problems start to go away after you’ve been off of them for long enough Saber27!
I was wondering…have you considered high doses of natural multi vitamins like (Nature Made and/or Captain Carrot), Vitamin E and Fish Oil (Vit E because I but I can’t stomach the fish oil) has very strong regenerative capabilities (something you won’t hear from your dentist or Dr), and lastly a high potency B-complex vitamin for energy? They have helped me! Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium has also helped me with the cramps.
Now I know why doctors look at me with disgust when I tell them that I have researched this or that on the internet…It’s because it cuts into their revenue stream! Every time I have told a doctor I have spent hours researching something on the internet they refuse to look at it! The creeps don’t want to admit you already know the answer when all you want from them is validation! I have been almost killed by doctors a few times…Viox…bad anti-depressants, surgery they aren’t as wise or as good as the act… nuff said!
Anyways I’ve rambled on long enough. I hope this has helped someone… And thanks for your postings and the Web sight! They have helped me! Energy drinks can go to…

I am 25 I drink Rockstar’s everyday anywhere from 3-6 a day. i was wondering how bad they really are for you. I hear it all the time from my boyfriend and from my dad. Telling me to stop drinking them. I have not really felt any side effects just a lil energy that’s really about it. which now i feel like I don’t even get that energy anymore I am so use to them.

  79. Jen |

I began drinking energy drinks around 2001 when i started college and continued to drink until I switched to coffee (yep..caffeine addict). My boyfriend is a school teacher and said that one energy drink at 6 in the morning keeps him alert, focused and puts him in an excellent mood during his day. I got on this website because he mentioned that he was concerned with all the potential risks and health factors that MAY/MAY NOT come with drinking energy drinks. I have read every post on this site and want to thank everyone for their comments. It seems as if there are possible correlations to gum and tooth decay, as well as the rapid heart beat and cramps. These are all things I experienced during my “monster” days but failed to make the correlations. It seems ironic that I didnt think sugar=tooth and gum decay and rapid heart beat…I was young… It is now 2010 and I can count on one hand how many energy drinks (aside from coffee) that I have had since 2006. My gums no longer bleed, my teeth are looking better than ever, and my heart doesnt “skip a beat” anymore. I still get serious cramps at odd times, and sometimes zone out (almost like my brain goes into a fog) but maybe its the coffee, maybe its the energy drinks, maybe its none of the above!

My huband drinks 2-4 monsters a day. He dosent sleep well at night and has severe mood swings. He also has stomach pain and burning while urinating. I have tried to suggest that he cuts down on the energy drink, but he argues that they are full of natural ingredients and they keep him healthy. He never drinks any water, only monsters, mountain dew, and coke-caffiene filled drinks. I am so worried about his health and the long term side effects from so much caffiene. The 1st thing he does in the morning is grab a monster and when he finishes it, he grabs another one. He don’t even eat until later on in the afternoon, he runs on caffiene and whatever else is in those drinks. I have reading some articles to him about the dangers. But after you are addicted and have a dependency to caffiene, how do you stop? Somehow this link just popped up on my phone. We didn’t download it, it just appeared. I think it’s a sign! I hope he will take all this into consideration.

You need to find an energy drink that gives energy from ADAPTOGENIC HERBS, B12 VITAMINS and with NO SUGAR. Stay away from Sugar-loaded energy drinks.

My best friend was complaining about his gums hurting about 2 weeks ago.Last thursday they found him dead. While the autopsy reports arent back yet,it is suspected these energy drinks played a large part in his demise. He drank around 2 per day. They did say the drinks eat up his cell structure, and was eating away at his internal organs.
So,my opinion is,Go get some life insurance on yourself,or someone you know, that is drinking this stuff.

I agree with a few of the posters that energy drinks are not necessarily good for you but at the same time you should take them in moderation. Anything taken in excess will kill you. As for the person named Rob that is 17 and posted about taking 9 monster drinks in one day. Are you stupid?? There is a reason why there is a warning ON THE DRINK can that says do not consume more than 3 in a day. You are lucky your heart did not explode from all the excitement. And why are you consuming energy drinks at age 13 – 17? As a teen you should not have any problems with energy! Lisa, as for your husband, all that sugar consumption and no water will lead to kidney stones. Give him a few more months and he will be crying when he pees and you will be saying “I told you so”. Or better yet warn him now before it is too late. As for the “crashing” after taking an energy drink, I found out that if you eat something before or right after taking the drink, you won’t crash. And don’t forget to drink lots of water to compensate since the energy drink flushes all the water out of your system.

I first bought the monster energy drink yesterday and it taste good. The reason I bought it because I want to stay up late, and it didn’t work, i was too sleepy. Today i drank it again and now i feel a little strange.. I am 18 years old and i have high blood pressure. I don’t feel my heart is beating fast. so.. I suggested that Energy Drink should not be made. too much sugar and it not good for me.

Wow,lots of great info here. My experience with low carb Monster is one I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I have IBS for 30 yrs, sometimes active, sometimes not. I drank low carb Monsters like water andy IBS went into high gear. I’m talking diarrhea for over a YEAR! I lost a lot of weight, became very dehydrated and went thru more tests than I can remember. Heavy duty prescriptions galore never even slowed it for a day. Gastro drs. were stumped. I “forgot” to ever mention the Monsters. (addict
behavior?). I finally stopped drinking Monsters and the diarrhea stopped! I’ve always drank diet EDs, but after some experentation determined that it was the Monsters. Pls consider stopping if you are having any gastro pain or related issues. Or at least consider laying off them for a short period, one day at a time.

Now I’m a Rock Star (diet) queen and having swelling in my rt foot. Denial is saying it can’t be the ED. Going to take my own suggestion & lay off them for a week. We shall see…..

I drank an XL energy drink yesterday and one today and I have noticed an unbelivable decline in my memory, but I don’t think this is the only one that has this side effect.
By the way, I drank 4 cans of Rienergy or XL last year in about 8 hours and I felt very weird, like there was something wrong with me , just that I didn’t feel pain, but didn’t feel like having fun either. My heart felt weird. I think it might have been arrythmia. I usually have BP 131 / 70. It might make somewhat of a difference.
It was 5 o’ clock in the morning and after 4 cans of XL I slept like a baby. Caffeine doesn’t seem to have that much of an effect on me.

I’d like to see you experiences with energy drinks.

    Live fast, die young.

Rob, your solution is pretty simple. On the back of every can of Monster, it tells you to consume responsibly and not drink more than 3 cans a day. (for normal sized cans.) On a can of Monster BFC, it tells you to drink NO MORE than one can a day. I’m sure if you follow what they say, you’ll be just fine. And for the record to everybody out there, I drink Monster energy drink everyday before work, sometimes I drink more than one can a day, however I follow the warning on the can and so far I’ve had no adverse effects (aside from some pretty intense bowel movements when I first started drinking Monster hah). I think that it really depends on your heart, and kidney health. Energy drinks contain stimulants, which cause your heart rate to increase, so if you have a bad heart you obviously don’t want to consume something that is going to increase your heart rate. Drinking these drinks while having kidneys in poor health could also be a bad idea, because drinking drinks like this puts more stress on your kidneys than necessary. In all honesty, there’s no need for anybody to drink Monster, but it does help you get through the day if you need a pick-me-up. Just drink it responsibly, just like with alcohol, and you should be set!

Despite all the “good stuff” that the companies are trying to sell us, there are so many side effects – more than we would like to count on both of our hands combined. There are still so many people that are gullible enough to keep trying or using these drinks. I used to drink a lot of SoBe energy drinks until I realized that I get horrible bouts of diarrhea every single time I finish a bottle. I stopped it altogether and my horrible bouts of diarrhea went away in a few days after it was all out of my system. I tried XS drinks – they are delicious and I keep thinking about the reaction I had to SoBe drinks and I just stopped after a few XS bottles. I prefer coffee and tea to energy drinks.

i dont drink energy drinks, i have coffee everyday but thats not a big deal. anyways last night i was with some friend and they were drinking bawls, this is a new drink that says there is 50% more caffine in it so i bought one just to try it and i drank half of it, it was so gross, it tasted like a nasty cheap fruity vodca, so instead i bought this drink called venom, and it was okay.
so when i get home i started to feel sick (light headed) and when i took my shoes off my feet were coverd in hives!!! at first i didnt know what it was from but then i was thinking it was from the energy drinks. i had an allergic reaction to it. im just glad it wasnt to serious

  92. Kathy |

For everyone saying that energy drinks are so bad, you army considering the other side of he story. I started drinking lo carb monsters junior year to supplement all the coffee I was drinking and to help me make it through my long nights of ap homework. I have been drinking these drinks religiously, having one or two a day along with coffee and other caffeine products and have never suffered any side effects. My blood pressure is still well within normal limits, and honestly I feel that I have gotten more up beat and I have been able to pay attention more since I’ve started drinking them. Let’s put it his way, every year I have failed or come close to failing my first period class, junior year when I started drinking my monster every morning, I for the first time recieved all As and Bs in my first period AP course. Now you try to tell me again that emery drinks are all bad because all I’ve experienced are good results.

My 22 year old son drank one Monster drink once or twice a week until three weeks ago. He was scheduled to work a night shift and go to an early college class the following morning. After class he had a late lunch with his father. He was feeling tired bought a Monster drink on the was home. Arrived home about 3:00 pm talked to me for about half hour went to his room was playing a video games with his younger brother and drank his Monster drink. Around 5:00 pm his brother yells “Something is wrong with Dale!” I ran it the room and he was having seizure, he face was blue and he was shaking all over; his back was arched, bitting his tomgue, hitting his head on the bed. (It was the scariest 5 minutes of my life.) 911 was called. His heart rate and blood pressure were high. He oxygen was low and he was placed on oxygen. He taken to emergency. Most of the test we negative, including a drug test. The only abnormal test was the blood sugar a little high from the sugars in the drink. The ER doctor asked if he drank a energy drink and he told them he drank one. The ER doctor and the nurse told me they had several cases of seizures related to energery drinks. (This has been his only seizure.) Called the Monster company, was told by Maria, “The can has a warning label do not drink more than three sixteen ounce cans in a day, or if caffeine sensitive, or pregnant”. The company feels it safe to drink and it is not responsible if someone has an adverse reaction. According to the company a seizure is not a side effect that is possible. He now has thousands in hospital bills that he has to pay (he does not have insurance) and it possibly could have cost him his life. He has not had another seizure since he stopped drinking the Monster drinks, he will not drink other energy drink because he is not sure they are as safe as they claim to be. Just be careful.

I think everyone has to stop worrying about what energy drinks can do to you. There aint any proof of anything that causes ill health. If you drink them responsibly im sure they wont do anything bad to you but drinking them obsessively probably will do damage. SO WHAT! Drinking too much fresh juice is meant to be bad for you too long term anyways. All im saying is everyone whos complaining is just giving their opinion, does not mean it is correct. Obviously some people are going to have bad reactions to it. god some people have bad reactions to nuts, That doesn’t make nuts bad for you. Does it? If you have a bad reaction dont drink it and don’t complain about it and tell everyone its the worst thing for you dont drink it. When some people sorry most people don’t get illnes short/long term. People may say or my friend died it was energy drinks. Yeh right! you don’t know how he died you mean and because there isn’t a full explanation to all ingredients in energy drinks you thought you would blame the energy drink. All im saying is drink it responsibly and don’t listen to the people who say its sooo bad for you if it were that bad there would be proof that its bad and the FDA would of advised a ban for it more than likely.
So my friends remember no half measures,
say hello to the grind and pound it down.

I love how everyone on here is saying how they drink coffee and that’s okay but these energy drinks arn’t. Has anyone ever stoped to look at the facts. One can of the average monster (original or lo carb) has 160mmg of caffinee while 1 grande starbucks original brew coffee has 330mmg of caffinee. That is more than double the caffinee yet everyone is saying how these drinks are so much worse than coffee due to the level of caffinee

I drink NOS energy drinks and also take yellow jacket energy pills on almost a regular basis. I work two jobs and still have to maintain a regular life so I take those to keep me awake, alert and keep me going. I have probably been taking them for about 4-5 years now and at first I was getting those crazy symptoms…shakiness, sweating, heart rythym sped up… and also started feeling nauesas but I have figured out over a period of time, my limits and also even though it does not say it on the bottle of either one, you must eat right before you take them… therefore you wont get nauseas or sick… I also know my limits and know how much to drink and how many pills to take in a period of time… I have done research on energy suppliments and noticed that a few people have passed away from energy drinks such as red bull and monsters, but as of yet, there is still no certain diagnosis on why they passed away. I am addicted to caffine and feel like children and young people should never start taking these, I wish I would have never tried it… Its basically like legal drugs… and its all very very much addictive.. so to all the younger children out there, Please dont start taking energy pills or drinks.. to be addicted to something, might be cool at first and feel great but after years, its not so cool anymore. Hope this post helped someone and feel free to comment any opinions on my post. Thank you.

Wow. For those of you that drink 5 cans a day and blame the drinks because you get sick, read a book or something. You’re dumb. Drink a couple litres of pepsi a day and see how you feel. As for the people that say they know someone that drank one can and had to go to the ER, you’re full of it. Oh, I also think the placeboitis guy was mocking all the dum dums too. Haha. Wow.

If you drink energy drinks every day, and just sit in front of the computer like the majority of Americans today, you WILL have side effects. And unpleasent ones. But if your part of the rare, active, non retarded kind of person who knows how to handle it in moderation alongside a healthy diet then Energy Drinks will do absolutely nothing to you. I take Ninjutsu 5 nights a week and go to the gym the days i don’t, eat healthy and get plenty of exercise and look at me. Drink one maybe 2 -3 days? Completely fine. And i like the post from Janurary “Ohhh cold sweats this chills that”, Heavy Metal Monster is A) good, and B) If you have an empty stomach or cant handle caffeine then yeah, sure, you’ll feel like s— drinking THAT much monster. Also, LOOK AT THE SERVING SIZE, maybe you should follow them if your so paranoid about energy drinks. LOL. Cold sweats.

I don’t see what’s so different between coffee drinking and ED drinking.

Take Monster for instance. It has 160mg of caffeine in a 16oz can. The same amount of coffee (2 cups only) has over 300 mg of caffeine.

What else is different. The monster is carbonated, has sugar, and B vitamins.

Ive been drinking red bull for about 3 years now and my feet get hard knots on them. I quit drinking red bull and it doesnt happen anymore, but when i start drinking them again, i get knots on my feet again and it hurts to walk. i can actually see where my feet are swelling. I know for certain it is the red bull causing this. Anyone else experience this?

  101. Candy |

I am nurse with 23 years of experience. My son is healthy, has not had another seizure since he stopped drinking the Monster drinks six weeks ago. He also lost 10lbs. I am happy to report because I really don’t want to see my son having a seizure problem because it would mean his driver’s license will be revoked and would mean tons of medical bills. We treat this as if he has an allergy to something in the Monster drink. No one knows when they will develop and allergy to something. Are people with allergies retarded? No!!! They must live life carefully. Take a person who is allergic to nuts, he or she may have his/her airway swell and it becomes an emergency unless they have an epinephrine shot to stop the swelling. I am concerned about some of the ingredients such 2500mg of “energy blend”. I don’t what is actually in it. I know niacin can cause “hot flashes” and to much potassium and cause problems with muscle cramping and heart problems. My son’s labs were normal except the sugar, so he didn’t have to much potassium. They don’t test for niacin. My son thought he was superhuman too until he drank the wrong thing. I see 30years old people dying from cirrhosis of the liver, they started drink as young teenagers. They too, think they are superhuman until they start bleeding from rectum and coughing up blood. Their skin is yellow as a pumpkin. Think twice about what you put in our mouth. Or don’t and I will have job security. It’s your dollar.

For the past few months I have been drinking Monster energy drinks. Usually I have only 1 in a 3 or 4 week period. Lately though, I have had 3-4 a week. I began experiencing light-headedness, confusion, extreme fatigue and loud noises really drive me up the wall. I believe there is something very dangerous in these drinks and I won’t be having another. Please use common sense and learn to take life a little slower if need be. God bless.

  103. Matt |

i guess i could say im proof of long term effects of energy drinks… i Have been drinking them every day for about 3 years. They are very addictive but at the same time i weigh the pros and cons. The pros i feel awake and very alert i work a night job and go to college full time. th cons probably the cost what many people dont understand is you need to pay close attention to your body if your heart feels like its running fast dont do anything overly demanding. many time i get 4 packs of energy drinks that usually run about 6 bucks sothe same price as mountain dew.

Some of the comments here have made me literally facepalm. Does anyone here understand the implications of too much caffiene? It’s the same as people that drink too much coffee on a day to day basis (teachers, you know what I mean). You become dependent on the substance and coming off it can have bad effects in the same way as consuming too much in the first place. Taurine, you don’t know what it is? It’s a non-essential amino acid, it can have very positive effects on muscle regeneration, for example after workouts, especially in combination with Creatine monohydrate or Creatine Ethyl Ester. Basically, kids shouldn’t use energy drinks for the same reason they shouldnt drink large amounts of coffee, and you need to be sensible about how much you consume.

  105. Dave |

I drink energy drinks, which my mother at first was reluctant to allow but she can’t control it anyway some people cannot handle the energy drinks. There is one energy drink which I felt gave me an overload and I thought I was gonna have a problem , the way to fix this people is simple… I don’t drink that energy drink any longer

  106. Judah |

Almost all energy drinks contain the same ingredients, so the same outcome short-term and long-term. New options are available that contain only nature made and pure ingredients. Dragon Pearl’s Super Natural Energy Tea shot contains fresh-brewed strong organic green tea mixed with pure berry and superfruit juices. Real food ingredients are absent in most energy drinks, they are simply chemical elixers.

Iam 33 years old and work the dupont schedule. It’s a rotating 12 hour shift from nights to days. I drink the sugar free rockstars one on the way to work, and on the way home, about an hour each way. I am hooked if I dont drink one for the drive. I will fall asleep at the wheel!!!! I keep telling myself I need to stop drinking them but everyday I find myself pulling into the convienant store to buy some. I understand what’s happening to my body when I drink them but I don’t know what the long term effects are hopefully they will be able to clone me a new liver later : )

Im a 19 year old jock and have been addicted to energy drinks for a year and im not just addicted to the caffiene/taurine but more so to the benefits when in the gym and when playing sports. My favourite drink is Rockstar Recovery which is non-carbonated lemonade. When i drink one can I can last longer in the gym and on the track and as someone who loves to push my body to its full extent these drinks are very addictive. This is going to sound lame but i also feel happy when i drink one and i think that this is my brain trying to get me to keep on drinking them because it is addicted to the stimulants. My friends tell me im going to have health problems from drinking them and i when i ask why they never really have an answer. I have now decided i am done with these drinks however even as im typing this i feel a dry feeling inside and am craving these things and lately ive been getting angry easily about stupid things like if my internet is running slow… so i dont think these drinks are good for you and i hope i didnt mess up any of my organs. I stopped 2 days ago and am going for a cold turkey approach and am just drinking tonnes of water.

  109. Annie |

I’m not a huge fan of the energy drinks, every once in a while I’ll drink a Red Bull if I have a super busy day because it does tend to last a little longer than coffee. I had never tried Monster until a close friend’s brother got a job as a marketer for the company and began passing out cases of this stuff to everyone. Now everyone has at least a case or two stashed away in a closet (I’m curious to see how long it takes the drink to eat out of the cans).

The first one I tried (and actually drank the whole thing) was the nitrous infused drinks. Pretty sure the nitrous has zero to do with making me more awake and more about the cool can and “frwoomp” sound it makes when you open it. My mistake was that I drank one and a half within an eight hour period.

The best way I can describe how I feel is HUNGOVER….I feel terrible and I only had one beer the entire night. I couldn’t sleep, the sleep I did get was restless and full of strange dreams. I’m dehydrated even though I tried to drink water. I had stomach cramps and became ill the morning after (as if I had been drinking all night). The day after I felt dizzy and sick to my stomach. It’s been terrible. I’m sure it’s because I had more than one but I never dreamed that I would feel so sick and ragged the next day. I’m never drinking this stuff again, besides there is no way that a liquid that is neon glowing green is healthy for you in any way.

Wake up, people. FREE AMINO ACIDS ARE BAD FOR YOU. They will get you sooner or later.

Three years ago, I realized that most of my health problems were being caused by diet root beer with aspartame. I was only having one glass in the evening after supper, and my evening didn’t feel complete without it. I had been doing this for years and don’t recall any symptoms at first, and my health had been gradually deteriorating so I didn’t associate it with only one diet root beer a day. But, then I read some of the dangers of aspartame and immediately dumped the rest of the liter down the drain. I had been having cramps in my left calf (the first one was so intense it felt like it tore the calf muscle). The cramps ceased the day after I quit the diet soda, but it was a full year before my calves were no longer the limiting factor in my exercise. Heart palpitations I had been having calmed down within a week. I quit getting pussy abcesses on my thighs immediately. The headaches I had been having about 4 days a week also disappeared immediately, my gums gradually improved, and my complexion turned from pale and blotchy to normal. Many other improvements, including more energy. I no longer had to rest half my weight on the shopping cart as I dragged myself through the grocery store.

After I quit the aspartame, I noticed that I sometimes felt shaky and uncoordinated and worried that I was coming down with MS. Then I realized that I only felt that way after having a meal heavy with MSG-related ingredients, such as hydrolized yeast or that “spice” that shows up so often in pizza sauce and salsa.

I cleaned up my diet the best I knew, and didn’t have those spells anymore, until recently. It seems I have become super-sensitive to MSG-related ingredients (ones that produce a lot of free glutamate or glutamic acid). I realized that the flax oil capsules I took sometimes to get “healthy” gave me severe reactions because of the gelcap. Same with most other pill supplements. I tried an elimination diet and bought some beef, but it turns out the beef was plumped and pumped full of “flavor enhancers” of some sort. I wandered around the house confused as to what to do all day, turning this way and that, was incredibly shaky and pasty-looking again. It took me three days to recover. Looking back, it seems I have had a small amount of MSG in my diet most of the time, probably causing the buzzing in my ears more days than not, chronic diarrhea, and jerky, sloppy handwriting. Recently, any unexpected noise has made me practically jump out of my skin. I am still working hard at getting all hidden sources of MSG out of my diet, and think I have done it.

Before I came upon this post, I read somewhere that the taurine in energy drinks is an antagonist to the glutamate in flavor enhancers, so I stupidly bought four, a type from Whole Foods with some real fruit juice and without a lot of the bad stuff in other energy drinks. I had one a day for four days last week, thinking that this would counteract the glutamate in my body, and then keep them around for emergencies only. Big mistake! By the third day, I got the same shaking and lack of coordination, buzzing in the ears, and mental fog as I did from glutamate in foods, plus extreme diarrhea (quite a bit worse than from glutamate), plus pressure in my chest and some radiating down my arm, so I believe I may have suffered a mild heart attack.

It has been two days since my last energy drink and four days without glutamate (with glutamate it’s harder to tell, since it’s so pervasive). And I still don’t feel normal yet. Still have buzzing in the ears, bad diarrhea and jitters. For those of you who still feel bad after quitting energy drinks, check out the rest of your diet for “flavor enhancers” under about 50 different names and for aspartame. I think once you have become sensitized to one, you are sensitized to them all.

For those who want to kill yourselves quicker, keep drinking those sugar-free energy drinks! Once the aspartame loses its formaldehyde, it produces glutamate, plus you have all that added taurine. That’s three free amino acids (all classified as excitotoxins, or neurotoxins) circulating in your body at once. If you’re lucky, you’ll be like me and have other symptoms that make you clean up your diet first, before you drop dead suddenly of a heart attack or stroke.

P.S. I never had a weight problem until they substituted the saccharine in diet sodas with aspartame. From that time on, I have slowly gained weight and absolutely could not lose it. Let’s see if I can lose weight with all free amino acids out of my diet.

I’ve been really angry for the last little while. I’ve been drinking a lot of energy drinks again, after taking a two week break a while back. I don’t get too much of an effect with Monsters, but I’ve had 3 RockStars in the last week and a half and that’s about the period I’ve been grouchy. My friend said she gets grouchy when she consumes red dyes… I’ve never really looked at a rockstar but I’m thinking maybe it’s a red colour. Won’t be having any more of those…

My son who is now 31, began drinking Monster drinks about a year ago. He seems to drink them excessively despite my warnings. He lost weight from around 180 down to 125 pounds. He began having severe panic attacks three months ago. He cannot tolerate a lot of people together or loud noises. I am scared I am going to lose him if he continues with these energy drinks since I am positive that they are what is causing his symptoms. Is there any genuine warnings out there about these types of symptoms?

Hmm, well, while I don’t believe energy drinks are healthy ]] I drink them all the time, they just need to be taken in moderation, just like everything else. I’m gonna die anyways, might as well enjoy the ride there.

  114. CH |

    haha, everyone body is different
exercise and eat right you should have a problem
if u want a energy from time to time !DRINK IT! its not
gonna kill u…..besides your gonna die of something cause no one makes it out alive anyways. I have been exercising and watching what i eat for years, i do have energy drinks from time to time, i feel fine. If you do anything in life out of moderation if will catch up to u…Even if u exercise too much or have sex to much…Moderation is the key. People are so dramatic, half the time we dont know what causes are health problems…. we just wanna blame someone or something…Things happen.. besides half the stuff that happens to us is self-inflicted

I’ve been drinking 1-2 cans of Rockstar each day because of the energy benefits it has given me ( due to the large amount of caffiene i’m sure.) Well, here is my traumatic story and I conclusively blame it on the Rockstar (RS) energy drinks. Recently, I was in a car accident in which I totalled my car and 2 others. I was driving and drinking my second RS of the day. All of a sudden I got dizzy and blacked out completely! Subsequently, I lost control of my vehicle. Four days later, in my new SUV, it happened again! This time, I didn’t just walk away. I flipped my SUV 3 times and flew over 60 feet. Yes, I had my seat belt on, THANK GOD, because it saved my life. I only suffered a broken back, concussion and laceration on my face. I blacked out again with an empty Rockstar in the holder between the seats. I know, call me stupid to not realize after the first accident that the blackouts were caused by a “supposedly safe” energy drink! If anyone has had any concurring experience, please respond or email me.

I think that the energy drinks are like a drug and shouldnt be sold to under aged kids. Atleast 7 kids die a year from energy drinks

  119. Heather |

I’m researching about energy drinks because I have a strong concern. I drunk a Rockstar a few hours ago and I’m still feeling the jitters of it. My concern being, other energy drinks I have tried does not have this affect on me. Though, on the other hand, Rockstar (especially drinking two in one day, which I have done) causes me to jump, shiver, shake, talk quickly, get angry more quickly than usual, causes me to feel like I’m thinking at 100 mph. It causes me to feel like I’m on drugs when I know for a fact that I’m not. Also, my heart skips beats, I’m have history of passing out, and I have breathing problems when doing work or exersicing. Could this be a good reason why I have such effects of the drink?

i just read some of these comments I had to find out if there was really alchol in these drinks mostly in “RedBull” and my cusion kepted making me read more what I didnt know it could lead to death I found out this after I got back from school from drinking those huge Monster’s Im gonna see if I can stop as soon as possible….& if it could also bring depression then that explains so much to me lmfao xP

i’ve been drinking on average 2 500ml cans a day for 6 months and love the stuff, working 12-16 hour shifts and alternating between day and night shifts really screws your body clock,i find consuming high levels of caffeine is an excellent way of managing periods of drowsiness. if you buy it in the cartons of 30 or the six pac while on special it cost not much more than soft drink. caffeine has been drunk all round the world for years and I’m yet to see any solid evidence that it has a negative effect on health. if there are any neg health effects i reckon the pros would probably still out-weigh the cons. Bring on the Red Bull!!!!!

    Isn’t this the FDA’S Job!!
I mean i thought the fda makes sure foods and drugs are safe for consumers? And if thats not what they are doing than wtf are they doing? Also if this is happening with something simple like a drink, no wonder! for every medicine you take there is side effects than they recall it. its like you take a new drug to get rid of the common cold and end up with cancer! i dont even go to a normal doctor any more i go to a holistic doctor and asked him what energy drink i should get he said it must have real sugar it must have less than 150mg of natural caffeine no guarana no taurine no ginsing and i could only drink at the most one a day and i must drink plenty of water. i asked him why no guarana and ginsing he said that they do the same thing a caffeine but have had less studies and unknown side effects stick with caffeine we know caffeine at least . He said absolutly no taurine he said taurine is a vile from a pigs lower intestince that is sinthetically made to metabolise the energy drink quicker which makes the energy blend more powerful because it get into your blood stream faster!!! he also said look for natural preservative because alot of energy drinks are made with harmful preservatives to make the drink last a long time at your expense! lets just say im still looking for that energy drink

if people want to drink too many energy drinks it it their choice. if u dont bother people who eat too much or who drink too much coffee then why bother us energy drinkers

All you just need to leave it alone. i love energy drinks. everybody is so anal towards anything bad to this kind of thing and just let it go and let people make their own decisions to do what they want yea people who are addicted to them read this article and want to tell their story. everybody who did this its fine to drink energy drinks its your choice. Do it if you want i know i will and anyone who warns me to stop can forget it (i cant use profanity). enjoy your life its short have fun. Live it.

I drank 2 diet rockstars a day for almost 2 years and I promise you they are absolutely horrible for you. The taurine caused my blood pressure to be 150/106 consistantly. I stopped drinking them 2 weeks ago and my pressure has decreased a minimal amount to around 145/102 still very dangerous. I am over the withdrawal period and praying to God that this is not a permanent thing. I have a dr appt next week. Please people be careful with these. My wife has been telling me for years about how bad these are. In her diet and for our 3 kids everything is organic and I promise you that our kids are never sick not even a cold. Nothing. The ingredients in these drinks and any processed food is literally killing people. I promise you that. I know it is more expensive but please no energy drinka and if you can go organic only. Ps I’m not some hippie or anything either. :).

I drink about one energy drink a fortnight and the only effect it has on me is the ENERGY!!! i really find that alot of people over react about a drink with some caffine, taurine and guarana in it. Its Ridicoulous! theres nothing wrong with energy drinks and stop fussing over a drink thats just a tad stronger than a morning cup of coffee.

Drinking Red Bull Flares my ulcerative colitis up so I stopped drinking it. I went about 6 months and bought a Monster. Thev have to be addictive. Cant go to work with out one. Starting to think I better stop drinking them. I just pass out driving home in the mornings. I just dont feel healthy no more. They give me awful heartburn an i sometimes feel funny in my gut area. They cant be healthy!

  133. Will |

Have tried them all. Mostly it is a placebo effect. I can drink one and fall fast asleep anytime. Can do same with expresso coffee. All these things they put into the drinks cannot be good for you long term. If you believe a drink will help you do more, then drink milk!

Reading all of these comments makes me feel like here is the explanation as to why my heart flutters, why I’m dizzy, why I feel like I’m going to go into convulsions cuz my brain buzzes and why I’m shaky and lost weight.. obviously these energy drinks are not good. I am addicted to Monster and have been drinking them for over a year, I started with redbull then switched.. I’ll drink sometimes 2 a day.. mostly just one a day. I don’t sleep maybe only 3 consecutive hours a night and toss and turn the other hours and my mind races along with my heart. I’ll feel a small dull pain in the center of my heart pretty much every day. I tell myself its gas.. Not good. Anyway, after reading all of this.. I probably will stop drinking the Monster now for sure.. I’m 42 and not ready for heart attack, my daughter is only 3.

“XS (get it – excess)” This is funny. This particular drink is actually marketed as a sports and health supplement. XS Energy drink marketing campaigns feature extreme sports like snowboarding and such so …. Xtreme Sports. GET IT?

  136. robert |

I have had adverse reactions to drinking rockstar energy drinks. The front of my thighs and my backside would get these welts and these areas would itch like crazy. The skin would be hot to the touch like it was fevered. I eventuallly quit drinking them and the symptoms went away. Now my 32 year old son, who drinks rockstars is having similar reactions but the itching swelled area is his scalp and face. I was just wondering if anyone else suffers wth those same symptoms

  137. Greg |

Maybe it’s just one of those things that’s not for everyone. I have tried most of the energy drinks out there and settled on Monster (green). I drink one almost every day and sometimes the big one, and have been for a few years now. I like the feeling of motivation I get and most of all the taste. The only side effects I have experienced have been the rare “crash” but only if I drink more than one and over extend myself on a hot day. If you have negative side effects to anything you should quit! On the other hand I really don’t feel like energy drinks are dangerous for adults (in moderation) but I would not allow my children to drink them.

  138. Ray |

Looks like a lot of crybabies here. I have been drinking Red Bull for years some days 3 or 4 some weeks none at all. If energy drinks make your tummy hurt of make you feel sad, STOP DRINKINGTHEM. The other 95% of us have no problems. I you are addicted to them you have some real will power issues.

  139. Brittany |

Try XS Energy, it’s a lot better and safer than the other energy drinks.

  140. Mehmud |

I’ve had like 5 in the last 3 days. I feel increasingly fatigued every passing day. These energy drinks are definately harmful. I’ve already promised myself not to take it again frequently.

  141. Mason |

Wow…. Is all I can say. I’ve been drinking the Monster Energy drinks for the past 3 years, almost 3 a day. Nothing has happend to me yet from this. I can sleep any time I want. I fell a lot happier when I drink them. I’m doing extremely well in school. I laughed when I read Roberts comment about the Taurine. Who obviously didn’t read that they have no idea what Taurine does to your body. And Heather thats what the energy drinks are supposed to do. They gave you ENERGY thats why u felt you were going 100mph. The only people who I recommend staying away from energy drinks are those with heart problems, and those who are sensitive to sugar, or who are diabetic. DRINK energy drinks at your own risk everyone is different and you shouldn’t think they are horrible just because you’ve had a bad experience with them. It’s not the drinks fault its yours. You are responcible for each and everyone of your actions. It is pathetic to blame your fail on an energy drink. 16-M-Highschool student. Drinking a 32 oz. Monster BFC.

I had to call 911 today after drinking one half of a Red Thunder shot. I had an allergic reaction to something in it – my lips and tongue swelled, I itched all over, and when I started having difficulty breathing, I knew I might be in trouble. Never again will I take any energy drink.

  145. Chris |

    Hey :)
I drink energy drinks all the time. The first time I had them I had about four 500ml cans of monster, it made me feel aweful, and I started uncontrolay shaking. Worst few hours of my life! The only thing is I adore the taste. I was 15 when I first started drinking them and although my school has banned them, I still managed to drink 2-3 large redbulls a day. At first I felt great and my friends noticed I was alot happier, then I started to get chest and stomach pains. Now I get lower back pains and although in terrified about what’s happening, I can’t stop drinking them. I’m not addicted because I only have them once a week or less but whenever I do I’m in pain for hours afterwards. I’m to scared of going to the doctors incase they say it’s bad but I see to just be in a loop and it’s horrible.

Seriously, if you think you are getting so your having alot stop before it starts to hurt! I went without an energy drink for months and I still get random pains. I hope I’ve scared you out of drinking them :/

I’m hoping they will release a monter flavoured drink that’s not an energy drink because I love the taste! Sorry if I bored you with a long comment!

I have been drinking Monster Low Carb for over a couple of years now. When I first had my first monster I got the rush and was hooked. There were no short term side effects except for feeling great. However, two years later I have started to experience some side effects. My habit was 1-2 cans of low carb (blue can) monster a day. It started with gas, lots of gas, so much my girlfiend had to leave the room. Then came the runny craps or constipation. I would be backed up for a day or two and then have the runs for the next couple and then back to constipation and this was consistant. All of the monsters had caused my kidneys to swell which caused me to retain water. It irritated my colon and caused it to swell. It irritated my small intestine and cause vitamin deficiencies due to lack of absorbtion. I stopped drinking monsters and all of my problems stopped within two weeks.

I started doiing night shifts at work. I am 25 yrs old. So I started drinking NOS almost every other night. I have been getting stomache pain, diarrhea and my menstrual cycle is always late. This time more than a week. I am just concerned, is it because of the NOS drink. I have done other tests, everything is normal, I am not pregnant. Please advice.

I have been drinking 1 small monster and 1 5hour energy drink. For the past 2 years and fill perfect. No side affects. I fill great durning the day and no crashing at night. I sleep fine. So I it all depends on the person how his or her body reacts.

i’ve been drinking sugarfree rockstars at least 2 a day for 4 years. I’ve recently noticed health issues that i believe are attributed to the e drinks. i hav muscle pain, twitches n my neck and my eye site is getting really awful. when i cut back i notice there not as bad. However i feel as though i can’t get motivated if i dn’t hav one n the morning. at night ending my day with medication for mania and anxiety thruout the medication required. Makes ya think…DUH!

so as you all know the effects of energy drinks on our bodies, some experience muscles contractions, stomach ache, joints pain, insomnia, crankiness, aggressive personality… but after all we still feel energetic and active for the day specially for those who drinks “energy drinks” so much. after 3 years drinking energy drinks, the day i stop, i could not even move my butt from the bed.. do nothing and stay sleepy(lazy) till i drink the next one… as i have too much commitments and responsibilities i cant stay away from these drinks yet i know all its effect.. but still waiting for a vacation :D to take the advantage of being free of work, to stop these energy drinks, and learn my body to start using energy from food. (stop energy drink, start a good healthy diet as a replacement) and then change the habit addiction..

I am trying to find out if anyone has had joint and back pain from the 5 hour shots. I don’t drink the energy drinks but have taken the 5 hr shots and am starting to notice pain the next day. i had a venom mango the other morning i did not get energy infact i didnt drink half of it and got sick from it its a day later and i feel like it ate up my stomach

  159. Kyle |

I’ve been drinking 1-3 monster energy drinks almost every day for about 3 years and it has helped my life in so many ways. Made me work out a ton better which made my body in tip top shape, helped me with school work to make me a way better student, and just basically made me do everything better. My attitude usually becomes happier and more talkative and people like me better when I’m like that. I can go without them if I wanted to, I have gone on week breaks but I really see no point if it helps out with so many different obstacles in life, why not.

  160. Pj |

I find it ironic that caffeine had such a negative reputation in the eighties and early nineties and now you see caffeine drinks everywhere and no ones really lobbied against their availability… Not recommended for children under 12 but merchants don’t enforce that nor are required to, as far as i know.

  161. MK |

I actually use to drink maybe 2 cans of Monster Energy a day. But then one night around 2am i went up out my bed and went to go to the bathroom and ended us passing out. I don’t believe i was out for long but i did get up and attempted to walk back to my bed . Then i ended up passing out again luckily on my bed. When i woke up after the 2nd pass out , i called my mom in my room and she took me to the ER and i was so dehydrated it took 3 bags of liquids in my IV to get me back normal. It was scary!! The DR said that JUST the two energy drinks dehydrated me so quick. I normally had clear skin but when i was drinking them it made my face very spotty and had pimples cause of the sugar does not help your skin it causes it to break out. I’m 19 and i normally don’t have breakouts much but drinking that stuff made it go crazy!! I learned my lesson!!!

  162. Brennen Dionis |

so basically, the energy drinks arent proven to do anything? your whole article simply states that there is no evidence on what some stuff is. and not only that, it says Nothing about it hurting you in any way. you pretty much described it like every other energy drink is described. this article does nothing for me when i looked up what the harmful effects were, and this junk came up? wow your a help. oh joy.

  163. james |

I’ve been drinking monster energy drinks for 5 years now maybe 1 to 2 a day but lately I’ve slowed down to maybe 1 every other day but it was consistent for a while and I’m now beginning to think that I’ve acquired problems from these things and have tested it my self. Ill have back pains neck pains and exseive poping of the joints, irregular heart beat, and some times pains in the lower abdominal area just like every one else is talking about. I think I have slight case of bipolar ness from it also.

I truly think now after 5 years of drinking these they truly do cause very negative affects to your body and I was the biggest skeptic of it.

I have the adult form of ADD and I take medication for it daily. The medication has its own side effects, including suppressing my appetite (which helped me drop 20 lbs). I started drinking Monster in the green can (one a day) before I started taking the medication and use to feel more energetic throughout the day. I assumed that must have been from the sugar in the drink. After I started taking the ADD meds, I had went back to drinking the green Monsters. WOW!!! What a rush! To put it in geek terms, it was like overclocking the CPU in your computer. It wouldn’t surprise me that people who get that kind of rush are on an illegal substance. The meds were to help me focus on my work. The Monster pushed that over the edge. I was so jittery and hyped up I couldn’t focus unless I multitasked on 20 things at once. By the time I went home I was starting to feel normal again. Believe me when I tell you that I DO NOT recommend anyone drinking any energy drinks while taking any meds for ADD/ADHD. Figuring out that the effects were due to drinking the green Monsters, I switched to the Lo-Carb Monster drinks. They contain only 3 grams of sugar. I still drink only 1 a day. The hyper effects are dramatically less, but I have started experiencing depression. Although I was told the brand of ADD meds I’m taking do not cause depression, I think the combination of the meds and Monster may have caused it. After laying off the Monsters for a week, I felt better. I also slept better at night. I still have a blue Monster a couple times a week, but I think it’s time to give them up permanently. Talk about kicking a drug habit.

  165. jjc |

I love my caffeine, coffee and tea. A few months ago I started drinking Monster drinks for a pep up as i was moving house and it was a very busy time of my life.
I looked up this article tonight as I have found myself not wanting but needing (like a cigarette addiction) a can of monster. I don’t drink them every day but every 2nd or 3rd day (sometimes 2 in a day). I know different substances have a different affect on different people but this is not something I have felt for a long time (similar to needing a cigarette as a smoker). I only have this feeling when I’m tired (I know the smarty pants will say get some sleep!) but I am sitting here at 9-10pm at night thinking should I go and drive somewhere just to buy a monster!
I have only been drinking them for a few months (before this never touched ED’s didn’t ‘like thte taste!) so I have no other health effects. I have at times noticed this almost “need’ for them when tired.
As I said earlier I drink coffee and tea and although I’m probably “addicted” to caffeine I don’t feel like this if I don’t get a fix of caffeine through tea and/or coffee.
Their is something else in these drinks maybe it’s just the sugar but sometimes I buy the low carb blue monster too. I don’t reguarly drink any other carbonated drinks, eg. coke, pepsi, lemonade etc.
The jury is probably still out on whether these drinks are harmful or not but I’m definitely thinking of staying away from them based on how I’m feeling at the moment (it was an effort not to go buy and one!).

ive been drinking 1or 2 sugarfree rockstars a day give or take for about 2 years if i space them 4 to 6 hours apart and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated they do wonders for my energy levels just never drink on an empty stomach or to close together or more than 3 in a day or you may get the jitters a headache or upset tummy i do however fear unknown long term effects

  167. CJ |

I started drinking monster about 2 years ago, today I realized that I don’t feel awake when i dont have one. I live a very intense life, training as a nuclear engineer in the navy, so I have no time to go through the withdrawals of coming off of them. Ive become dependant on monster to make it through the day, but can no longer do it, these are the side effects that i personally have come in contact with.
1:It’s hard to get to sleep. on my schedule I need to be able to walk into my berthing quarters, take off the uniform and go straight to sleep. But I find that as I drink more monster, I fall asleep slower and slower.
2:Concentration is a major factor. Energy drinks are chalked full of stimulants and other legal drugs, monster litterally promotes it’s product by advertising the buzz associated with it. Basicly why I’m saying this is, when a drug is used to enhance concentration momentarily, it is followed by a slightly less intense, longer lasting, opposite effect. Energy drinks do help concentration momentarily, but the ‘burn out’ effect afterwards last must longer.
3:heart palapations – rapid heart beat.
4:dehydration, changes in appetite and mood.
5:muscle spasms, a few occasions when I have had 3 drinks, I sometimes experience tight clinching of my chest and leg muscles.
    6:headaches
    7:Changes in mood.
8:weekly flash and crash (as explained in the article)
These are symptoms experienced after 2 years, drinking energy drinks in a high stress environment is extremly detrimental to health and well being. This is my personal experience, not a factual post.

Is it bad if u drink the energy drink MONSTER like once a week i just wanna know thanks

  169. rokkergurl |

a lot of my friends drink those and save the tabs, and i tried a monster import once and it just made it harder for me to focus for an hour.

people don”t realize caffeine and taurine and stuff are drugs. you could become addicted to them or react badly to them for all we know.

so here”s probably the worlds only teenager saying i think that stuff is dumb to drink. yeah they do taste kinda good but still…why risk your health? just exersize to train your body to produce its own energy…its safer and smarter.

  170. seeseeitnow |

those things can cause your heart rate to go up, and bob marleys bring it down…creepy. could be dangerous.

  171. shannan |

I had one or two energy drinks 4-6 days a week for a year. I always noticed that coming down off of them would leave me depressed, blurry vision and tired. Now I can barely see some days, have experienced crippling fatigue for eight months and have been considering anti-depressants. I can measure in hours the change in my vision when I have an energy drink and I know I will experience excessive moodiness the day after an energy drink. My job depends on my eyesight and I fear I will have to leave my profession if it does not return. I have stopped using energy drinks and now I can only hope my body returns to its previously healthy state. In case anyone is wondering the sugar free energy drinks are Worse for you than the regular kind because sugar substitutes like aspartame are lethal!

  172. Chad |

I drink 5-6 cans of Monster low carb a day. EVERY DAY. I have been doing this for 3 yrs. The only effects I notice are a caffuene headache in the mornings. I guess I must have built up some sort of tolerance, as I have never once experienced any of the problems some of you describe. I’m sure many will respond with how dumb my consumption level is, but honestly, I find zero evidence ANYWHERE that energy drinks with low to zero sugar, are bad. So…my point is, maybe drink the low/no carb drinks.

  173. dave |

im on this website looking at the info as my brother is in hospital with a rapid heart beat 8 hours after mixing crunk juice with alcohol, its the first time he has done this and i believe he will not be doing this again, the doctors looking at him have prescribed two different types of beta blockers to bring down his heart rate and they have not worked, hes staying in overnight and the doctors are 90% sure crunk juice has done this to him, my brother is 25 and never had any problems before this, i guess im writing this just to warn people to stay away from drinks like these there bad news. dont get me wrong 99% of people who drink these may be fine but theres always that chance so my opinion is they should at least have a health warning on these drinks.

  174. Carol Matthews |

Our local drug rehab facility has placed “energy drinks” on their list of consumables that will get a person dropped from the program. While taurine does sometimes test positive for amphetamines the energy drinks are definitely mood altering beverages and are not helpful in the treatment setting.

  175. BlackHawk |

I am currently having severe sleeping problems due to what is going on in my life (as in work, emotional stress, etc…). After almost falling asleep at two meetings I started drinking Monster energy drinks (the green one, and today I am actually trying the lo carb light blue one).
I’m not sure why, but these drinks seem to have very little effect on how awake I feel, neither short, nor long term (throughout the day).

As the article says, the effects on the body depend on your personal body chemistry.

I have had alcohol&Energy drinks before, but also there, no big reaction.
@dave, I am very sorry for what happened to your brother, and hope he is getting better.
I agree that they should have a notice of some sort, but when mixing different kinds of chemicals (in this case alcohol and energy drinks, and everything that is contained in these drinks), there is always an even higher unknown risk factor, which common sense should warn you of as well ;)

Ok… here is the thing, i have been drinking energy drinks for years. no troubles no aches and pains my choice of drink is MoNsTeR!!! If you (SLAM) the can down you will make yourself sick . if you drink the can like you drink a normal soda pop it dont shock your system… I will lay money on the line most of the ppl. here that are having back pains and such are exceeding more than (2) 16 to24oz cans a day .. ok lets look it it like this what happends when you (SLAM) a can of beer down ?? the excess of liquid into your stomach at a large amount displaces food already being digested IE: FULL FEELING.. carbonation also in soda pop will make you feel full, simple logic.. i my self have a energy drink can collection .. that almost fills a whole wall , so that being said … if you drink your energy drinks like a normal human being , not like a madman on a drinking binge!! not exceeding more than 2 cans a day example one in the am and one in the pm NOTE: if you are pregnant nursing of have any medical conditions you (NEED) to consult your family doctor before you start drinking energy drinks … anyway thats just my 2 cents worth Thank you .. Mr. Sycko

When I wake up during the day I have two cups of coffee throughout the day and then I usually have a energy drink or two before work since I work third shift at UPS. The cost gets steep after awhile so I figured I had better look into something else. I had always heard bad things about caffeine pills and their evilness but upon a review about it I came to the conclusion that the arguments aren’t really easy to uphold. Most people will drink coffee and energy drinks but think negatively of caffeine pills for some odd reason. Caffeine should still be taken in moderation of course and it is no answer to a lack of sleep as well.

Overall certain pills give me a good boost to help me get through my night at work and so far no bad side effects. I did notice I can’t sleep sometimes so my solution was just to take a pill a little earlier. I take a whole pill since I am not really to sensitive to caffeine but if you don’t know how you will react than you should probably go with a half or so. You will know pretty fast if you had to much so just don’t over do it and don’t feel you have to absolutely always have them to get through what you need. You can probably get a good habit going if you think you absolutely have to have pills to get you through everything. Make sure you sleep enough since there is no substitute for it or you might find yourself driving and feeling the need to close your eyes to rest a second and not have them reopen. If you don’t like coffee or energy drinks I would say these would be the best way to go to get a caffeine kick.

my sister has just passed away, she had a cardiac arresst.she was drinking about 6 energy drinks a day.she was 43.i am convinced these drinks had something to do with her passing.she was perfectly healthy before these drinks.we have since found out that she was suffering from palputations.and was also unable to sleep.they should be banned.perhaps some people wil think i am trying to find something to blame.but after my reserch on these drinks i think i am right.she did drink them excessively, but we never knew there any dangers in this.people need to be warned.xx

Just my $0.02 on the subject – I have been an avid drinker of Monster (2-3 cans per day) EVERY SINGLE DAY since 2004 when it hit the shelves at the gas station around the corner from my house. My personal experience has been exceptionally good with this product. For example, I used to get sick frequently from colds, asthma attacks, bad allergies, respiratory infections, etc. Since indulging in the energy drink “craze” (please keep in mind, Monster is the only one that I drink) I have noticed an astoundingly significant boost in my immune system. Again, this started within the same 3-4 month period that I began buying the drinks.

Given the fact that it has been roughly 7 years of multi-daily consumption, the caffeine no longer gives me the jittery energy, but is rather a smooth transition from feeling “blah” to “ok, I have stuff to do, let’s knock it out”. I have one first thing in the morning with my “wake-up cigarette”, one around lunch, and, if I feel like going out to the bar or whatever after work, I’ll have another. Throughout the day I drink a bottle or 2 of SmartWater or Gatorade to keep myself hydrated and eat/snack as usual. I can honestly say that Monster has had a positive effect on my life, you can take this info however you want it, but until the day my heart explodes or diabetes sets in, I have no negative connotations regarding this product. Cheers!

I’ve been drinking monster for a week about 2 cans a day and I havent been drinking water or eating more than once a day I just had a emotional freakout and my family calmed me down. monster is not good nor any other energy drink when not used in moderation

I drink sugar free monsters and redbulls pretty often a few (3-6). I’ve been drinking them for about 3 years, I’ve been drinking more this year, I’m very active and eat healthy. I’ve been feeling really dizzy lately I noticed it was within the hour that I drank an energy drink. I fell down and slammed my head on the corner of a concrete flower box thing, that’s how uncontrolled I was of my body. I had to go to the hospital and get stiches, the doctor diagnosed it as something that’s seen a lot in teenagers mostly girls, but they said the main reason was because of dehydration, well I make sure I drink A LOT of water through out the day, so I knew that couldn’t be it and also when I drink energy drinks within the hour I feel a very sharp pain in my abdominal area, it can last for hours. today I tried buying a monster (sugar free) , but the guy said I needed an I.D!!!? wth I have to be eighteen to buy that now?! Stupid.

I’ve been drinking an energy drink for a couple of yrs now in every time I drink some, my shoulder hurts like hell. I wonder if it’s the caffeine or some kind of ingredient in it. Oh well I have stop taking the product and the pain has vanished. Weird!

This is a very informative article. I see alot of people hear having alot of health issues from these energy drinks. I thought they weren’t good for you, but didn’t know they were actually causing issues. I don’t drink these drinks. I don’t believe I will start. I have quit the sugar-free stuff, also. I have been taking an all natural energy drink that does give real energy and no crashing, as I hear alot of people have with these others drinks. If you are interested contact me.

My son is 22 and a college student. He was working an event and they were passing out free Red Bull. He drank 15 in an 8-hour shift and woke up at 3am with heart palpitations and was rushed to the ER. His blood pressure was 190/120 – stroke range. They put him on an IV and brought his blood pressure down. Two weeks later, the palpitations happened again. He has been to a cardiologist, had a cardiac MRI, stress test, and Echocardiogram. We are still waiting on results. Before this, he had NO health issues at all. He played high school and college football. Now, even his career choice is at risk because of drinking Red Bull. Do NOT drink this drink, it is dangerous.

I have been drinking monster energy drink for the past 5 years and have never had any bad side effects. I drink between 1 and 3 a day of the regular sized cans. I normaly drink one as soon as I wake up and one in the evening when I start feeling tired to give me an extra boost to take care of 1 and 3 year old. I do get jittery sometimes after I drink one if I didn’t eat or shanky and as soon as I eat I feel better. I also find myself forgetting to drink water when I drink them and if I start to get a stomache ache and feel a little weird as soon as I drink a glass of ice water I feel better. Its probably me getting dehydrated. Just watch yourself when drinking them. Remember to drink and eat. I love these things they help keep my energy up threw the day, after I drink one it never fails to make me poop. So it helps me go easier. They make my energy go up but also relax me at the same time. They probably aren’t a good thing for people sensitive to caffine and probably have worst effects on them. As for your teenagers their teenagers. Their hormonal ticking time bombs. Lol my only complaint with the monsters is I find myself spending a bunch of money on them and they are the only thing I’ve found myself craving as much as cigarrettes. So for my wallets sake I want to try to cut down to maby 3 a week. Plus it is true we don’t know the long term effects. But a lot of what you all are saying could be anything. Because 80 percent of america drinks energy drinks to some degree. Anyways be safe, watch yourself, and only do what you feel your body is ok with. Listen to it. :)

  191. TAKE IT EZ |

no1: no energy drink has no caffine period. if theres no caffine on the list u can bet on it being in some other ingredient.
no2: im not against energy drinks, im just against people drinking six a day and killing themselves with the rush, or if not ruining their organs for the rest of their lives.
    ONLY DRINK IN MODERATION!!!!!!

  192. Daniel wahl |

Oh yeah. Dashon S, probably the reason you were going through those emotional breakdowns was because you were starving and dehydrating yourself… Nothing to do with the energy drinks.. Just saying.

Okay, so, listen up. All of you.
I’m a teenager, but I know my stuff. I began drinking monster energy drinks a while ago and noticed many changes in my body. I loved it. I liked the hype, the loss of weight, and the chaotic thoughts. I later understood that that was a bad idea for my body because it was constantly having problems when I drank it periodically. I went on a splurge, from Monster to Amp, drinking them all the time. I understood what I was doing to my body and I was being careful, limiting it to a short amount each time. Everyone on here is saying that if you drink too much, you can be harmed, and that is true. But do remember that you can drink wayyy too much one day and still have it in you a few days later, which won’t help if you douse yourself with even more. I am faithful to energy drinks, I do drink them, and I won’t stop soon. I am careful and I know the risks. You, dears, are dumb if you think that you can drink many for years and not expect consequences later in life. It’s like drinking small doses of poison multiple times a day and expecting it to not go into your system. Be smart.

  194. JDM |

I knew about the RedBull and alcohol since my friend is an EMT, but it’s not just RedBull, it’s other energy drinks if they’re mixed with alcohol.

I don’t drink, but I do drink energy drinks, and about the “immune” part where they explain the body make up, I can drink up to 2 red bulls and it just feels like I drank a cup of coffee, redbull is stronger so which means I can drink a 4pack of regular energy drinks and not even get any effect at all. But in the past before I realized you could get aneurisms (long time ago) I heard on the new about something that had a massive aneurism to where the victim had a bloody nose and was in the ER, still I find it weird how it doesn’t effect me in that way. But since I did research, Red Bull is the strongest of all energy drink brands so I dubbed it down to 1 of redbull if I were to drink that brand.

NEVER allow anyone to drink a full big can, or more than 1 regular sized can of Red Bull if you don’t know the caffeine intake that your body can handle.

I know this is long but I just wanna know if anybody else has experienced the same thing… Whenever I was 12 and I was at cheer camp over the summer I had my very first monster. Since we could barely sleep at night and we worked hard all day long we basically depended on them. So, I had about 2 (they are very discusting to me). The night before the competition I woke up off and on through the night until I finally woke up at about 4 or 5. I felt very confused and alot of mixed emotions that I can’t explain. I kept having weird visions (I’m not sure if they were dreams or not) but they were stressing me out and I kept crying. I kept visioning (or dreaming) that a teamate was in the dorm with me and I kept calling out “hello?’ or “is anybody else in here?” Then nobody would answer but I knew that I was alone and I was having all these visions but they seemed so real. Not to mention the fact that I was nausea and I even had a dream/vision that I threw up. Since I was crying so much I called my mom and she just told me it was nerves… I found out about a month or two later it wasn’t nerves.. My friend stayed the night and I only had half a can and woke up at eight and was crying, felt stressed, and having visions (even though I was awake). There’s no easy way to explain the feeling that I had both times. It’s kinda like I felt high or something. If something similar has happened to you or anybody you know, PLEASE leave a reply..

Energy drinks are not bad as long as you don’t drink alot of them – like someone said here 3 times a day. Maybe try 1 or 2 a month – also full throttle is the worst there is. If you open a can, drink half and leave it sit for a month you will see that there will for some kind of chemical sponge inside. I mean there will almost not be liquid in the can anymore.

  197. Claudia |

Yeah, I agreed on you Dr. Oz that energy drink is not that bad. I used to drink 3 cans everyday and feels me energetic throughout my whole day of working. That’s product help out my tiresome.

  198. Claudia |

I do believed the fact that Energy drinks is not totally bad for our health as along as we don’t drink a lot at the same tine we know how to control ourselves. Thanks for sharing.

People, listen up. The worse thing about energy drinks is the ones that contain, aspartame, sucralose, and/or acesulfame K. Regular sodas contain these as well. The effects of these additives is murderous. Just do a little research and you will want to stop drinking these things, unless you are so addicted you just don’t care. I had a friend who daily drinks soda with aspartame say, “I’ve been drinking these for years and it hasn’t hurt me.” Of course he is grossly obese and has many health problems. The insidiousness of these additives is that you may not notice them doing anything to you for a while, but then one day when your kidneys stop working, or you develop dementia, it is too late.

    Listen up!!!!

Wow i seriously red more than halfbthe responses.
You guys are probably pretty old. The majority of ypu act like a energy drink is crack. Sure its not as good for you as water or juice but iys not gonna kill you. Sure if you drinks 3 rockstars and dont eat food or drink anythong else then yes you will be sick. Really get out of your small minds and see that energy drinks are basically extremely sugary coffee that have a ffuity flavor. I drink energy drinks every day for years never any side effects but i do actually have more to my diet than energy drinks

  201. john |

wow really after reading a few of these comments that people posted on how they consume so much of a drink and they are finding that they are having problems……hmmmmnnnn.. dont you think that you should read the can, it clearly says not to consume 3 or more cans in a day…. wow some people are dumb. and Jsm I totally agree with you i drink maybe 2 monsters a day and as long as i eat before hand i am good they simply taste good to me and if i drop one it does not go flat like pop does lol

One normal can of Rockstar has three servings, and each serving has 200% of Vitamin B12 (Rioboflavin), so there is 600% of the daily value of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 overdose causes central nervous system disorders and liver damage. There are already children waiting for liver transplants from drinking to many energy drinks. Thanks for opening my eyes, guys!!

Hey, today I went for a pre employment swab test I had just drank a full throttle and I tested positive for amphetimines they then sent me for a urine test about two hours later to be sent to the lab I ate and drank some sweet tea and sprite before the urine test. I have since then read alot of people that the same thing has happened. I am wondering of this would be the result for anyone or if different peoples body chemistry causes this effect. A very plausable course of action would be a lab survey with 100 people with different tests and different energy drinks to properly document which ones tested positive and then narrow the drinks and if the chemistry is the same then publish the results to the FDA for them to caution people on the effects

I have been drinking energy drinks for the past 9 years. When i was a teen i must admit i did consume far to much caffeine. I was addicted. So much so, that i was not able to sleep with out having a coffee or energy drink before going to bed. (Complete opposite to what caffeine is meant to do), but i just had a very large dependency over the years of abuse. I eventually got help for my addiction, though the with drawls made me very ill for about six months. Throwing up, very bad headaches, the usual. (This is normal with cold turkey). Ive never been able to get fully rid of this addiction. Its very tough. Every morning i have to have ONE can of energy drink, just to get rid of the morning sickness and headaches. That is now the only intake i have (Besides a coffee later in the evening). Recently in the past few months, i was hit like a tone of bricks with illness. Doctors thought i may of had a autoimmune illness, though my body was not creating excessive amounts of antibodies. Honestly, they couldn’t tell me what was wrong with me, but i was, and do feel like i am dieing. I took it on my self try and find what is wrong with me.

My symptoms might i add were
    -Excessive fatigue
    -joint aches
    -Increase in flem
    -dizziness/confusion
-iradic breathing / weighted feeling on chest
And so on. I have had tests for every thing that these symptoms could be signs of, but yet doctors don’t know, nor am i improving. I also might i add, had a ultrasound, for various things they were testing for. I took it on my self to experiment, weather i was becoming allergic to some thing, to a mould, or perhaps a change in work that has a old air conditioner. Then i eventually moved to energy drinks. At this point i got progress. Breathing got far worse, as well as fatigue. I was almost at the point of not being able to work. A taste/smell developed more aggressively, the more energy drinks i drank in the week. My intake of energy over the week was a maximum of 3 energy drinks in a day for 7 days. Bearing in mind i drank allot of it in my teens, i was easily able to smash through 9 red-bulls a day.

To cut things a little shorter, for the following weeks i dosed my self in various ingredients that energy drinks contain. Not much to tell from the separate ingredients. Coffee im fine with, though a can of energy drink i reacted bad with. Other B vitamins and sugars i reacted fine to. A month or so later, i was taken to hospital, as i was having many cramps and pains of the stomach. I had another ultrasound/scan and this time they found 6 sist’s. Though they found them then, they had not seen them in the earlier ultrasound and scan. Though i find it hard to keep away from energy drinks, i did strive for a good 3 days with out, and any and all of my symptoms improved.

I believe my fatigue, confusion inflamed lymph notes, joint aches muscle pains and spasms and so on, are linked to the abuse of energy drinks over the years. Though you become immune to the effects of energy bursts of 1 can of energy drink, your body still has to cope with this large sugar and caffeine content.

I am still experimenting on my self. Whether some thing else is making me ill, who knows, (apparently the NHS doesn’t), but i personally think there is a health risk with prolonged usage of energy drinks. I did to be fair use it in a large quantities, at a young age. So please bare that in mind.

    Cheers!

I mostly drink ripit but every now and then drink a monster and i feel fine but do get a little shaky sometimes but that happens normally anyways when i am hungry but i can tell when i feel dehydrated to and just drink extra water. As far as I know i am fine. I agree with the therory that the extra caffine dehydrates people and they just don’t realize it. if you feel funny i would say eat something and drink extra water works for me.
