It seems that every season of American Idol is full of scandals and “shocking” behavior among its contestants. Here are some of the most popular scandals, controversies and surprises. These are in no particular order.
Frenchie Davis Topless
Season 2. Frenchie had posed for topless photos prior to her appearance in Idol. When this was discovered, she was disqualified. Contrast this with Antonella Barba…
Hot Photos of Antonella Barba
Season 6, 16th place. Before coming onto Idol, Antonella has posed for some hot, racy photos. These came out as she was working her way up the Idol ladder. She was not disqualified which caused stir because of Frenchie Davis’ dismissal from the show in few seasons earlier.
When the photos came out, Antonella Barba was one of the most searched names on the Internet for a short period as people were dying to see more of her. She’s really hot which is probably one reason American Idol producers let her stay.
Paula Abdul Criticizes Jason Castro for a Song He Didn’t Sing
Season 7. There’s a lot to say about Paula but here’s one for the record books. She told Jason Castro that both of the songs he performed weren’t that good. The problem is that he had only done one of them at that point during the show. The judge bias had people going crazy.
Bikini Girl Katrina Darrell Vs. Judge Kara DioGuardi
Season 8. Total hottie Katrina Darrell dissed newcomer American Idol Judge Kara DioGuardi during the auditions. Katrina was eventually eliminated but came back on the season’s final episode to show off her boob job.
She started singing when Kara seeingly surprised her by coming out from behind the stage and took over the singing. Kara then “got her revenge” as the 38-year old open her dress and revealed her own bikini.
Jessica Sierra: Rehab & Sex Video
Season 4, 10th place. Jessica surprised us by being sentenced to 12 months probation and then appearing on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky. Ok, the real shocker was her sex tape “Jessica Sierra Superstar” which came out in 2008.
Nikki McKibbin Goes to Rehab and Sober House
Season 1, 3rd Place. Like Idol vocalist Jessica Sierra, Nikki was also on VH1 Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. She then appeared on the follow-up show Sober House. She did well in rehab and made it through the passing of her mother which had a major impact on her drinking and cocaine habits.
David Hernandez Strips
Season 7, 12th place. After David got eliminated, it was revealed that he was a dancer at a gay bar in Phoenix, Arizona.
Paula Abdul Obessessive Fan Paula Goodspeed Commits Suicide
Season 5. Paula was obsessed with Paula Abdul. She auditioned on the show but was awful. She was one of those people who then went on and on about how they were so much better than others who make it to Hollywood. She stalked Paula Abdul for months and in 2008 she committed suicide outside of Abdul’s home.
Terrell and Derrell Brittenum: The Trouble Twins
Season 5. These twins were decent singers, even if they were somewhat annoying, but got disqualified when it was revealed that they had been charged by police for forgery and other offenses. Not to mention the apparent lies released by their record label about their dismissal from the show, which made it look as though they walked away from the show on their own intiative.
Adam Lambert Loses to Kris Allen
Season 8. In the biggest upset in American Idol history, Kris Allen beat Adam Lambert to become the season’s #1 idol. Adam Lambert consistently worked the songs, the stage, the crowd,… everything. Kris Allen was great but not win-idol great. Adam was probably the single most impressive contestant in Idol history. My guess is that he lost due to the barrage of news stories claiming he was gay that came out in the 2 weeks leading up to the finale. There are still too many homophobes out there and letting it influence your decision is ridiculous.
Corey Delaney Clark Gets Disqualified
Season 2. Corey was disqualified for failing to disclose to the show’s producers the fact he had an police arrest record. He then went on to write a book in which he claimed to have an affair with Paula Abdul. He produced some evidence but she denied it.
Mario Vasquez Suddenly Drops Out
Season 4. Apparently, Mario decided that his singing style was unique and he was better off without Idol.
Justin Guarini’s Career Tanks
Season 1, 2nd Place. Right after coming in second to Kelly Clarkson during the first season, the two singers were rushed into a movie called “From Just to Kelly”. The movie bombed beyond belief and Justin’s career never recovered.
Kristy Lee Cook & Carly Smithson
Season 7. Both of these babes were given a hard time because they had signed music contracts in the past. They were both ok though because while on Idol, the two were not signed to any label.
David Archuleta Doesn’t Go Far, Twice
Season 7, 2nd Place. David Archuleta is an amazing singer who has yet to n’t produce. He won on Star Search and even that TV fame hasn’t brought him to a radio near you. We’re still waiting to see what happens with him. He went on a short tour in 2009 but that was about it.
Voting by Phone Controversies
Over several seasons, there have been many claims that contestants lost votes because of the wrong numbers, text message issues, and related voting system problems.
Joanna Pacitti Quietly Disappears
Season 8. Made it to Top 36. A number of people wondered what happened to this hottie when she suddenly disappeared. A mini-controversy took place when Joanna apparently told producers that she knew people involved with the show. She was then disqualified.
