I finally took the plunge and bought an iPhone a while back. It turned out to be one of the best technology purchases that I’ve made in a long time. Yes, I’m paying more for the service plan than I was before, but it’s just so worth it.
Your iPhone is a Computer
The iPhone is not just a mobile device used to make phone calls, it’s a powerful computer that goes with you everywhere.
The beauty of it is that it’s designed with you being everywhere in mind. Aside from the fact that it’s is extremely easy to use (and I mean extremely easy!), you can download apps (applications, meaning little software programs) to enhance and fully customize your iPhone based on your personal needs.
Aside from the basic apps that come pre-installed like an iPod, photo camera, video camera (iPhone 3GS), voice recorder, GPS, easy access to YouTube, stocks, Yahoo! weather, and others, you can click the apps icon and search for more. There are thousands to choose from. Many are free and most have a nominal fee of 99 cents to a few dollars. It’s incredible!
Cool Apps
If the phone itself isn’t enough to convince people about how cool it is, try showing them these apps!
SnapTell: Take a photo of a book cover, CD, DVD and the iPhone will instantly recognize it, give you links to places to buy it (like Amazon.com), show you reviews, and link to other relevant websites talking about it. This is convenient for a lot of things such as when you’re at a video store and you’re not sure what movie to rent. Or, if you’ve just found a book and want to see what people say about it. The image recognition technology is unreal!
Shazam: Listening to a song on the radio and you want to know who the singer is or the name of the song? Just start this app and it will give you the details.
Google GPS: This app comes pre-installed with your phone. Click on “map” and a map will instantly show you where you are. If you’re in a car and moving, it will move with you. Just type your destination address in and it will give you directions. There’s no more need for printing directions in advance. As yet, there is no voice added so a full GPS is still better but this has served me very well up to now and it’s only a matter of time until we get a choice of voices to tell us where to go.
Flixter: This app will give you a list of all the current movies and where they’re playing in your area.
Flashlight: A lot of people will think this choice is lame but basically, this gives you a bright, white screen that will help you find things in the dark.
More!
The apps list above is obviously not comprehensive. I have created a long list of cool apps and I’ll be writing about them in customized articles such as the best travel apps, and so on. There are tons more super cool apps available for iPhones and the iPod Touch and more amazing ones to come.
