Wil Wheaton Teases a Stand By Me 40th Anniversary Reunion at Montreal Comiccon

One of the sessions I was excited to attend at Montreal Comiccon 2025 was the Q&A with actor Wil Wheaton. I was very impressed by his no holding back approach. He talked about Star Trek, of course, and The Big Bang Theory, which are fan favourites. But I was pleasantly surprised to hear him share memories of Stand By Me, the remarkable coming-of-age film that has become a classic for audiences spanning nearly four decades.

Based on Stephen King’s novella The Body, the 1986 movie follows four boys on a journey to find the body of a missing child, an adventure that becomes a powerful story about friendship, grief, and growing up.

From the moment he began speaking, Wheaton emphasized how extraordinary the project was. “It’s a testament to Rob Reiner, who was great at picking us as the actors,” he said. “It’s the reason that it has endured and stood the test of time.”

A Cast That Became Icons

The film’s cast included Wheaton as Gordie Lachance, River Phoenix as Chris Chambers, Corey Feldman as Teddy Duchamp, and Jerry O’Connell as Vern Tessio. They would all go on to leave their mark on Hollywood. Wheaton recalled how deeply their own lives were intertwined with the characters they played.

“Every one of us is living our lived experiences inside those characters,” he explained. “That River was someone who was told who he was when he walked into a room instead of being discovered for who he was. He was failed by his parents who were supposed to protect him at that age. That’s exactly who Chris was.”

Real Life Reflected On Screen

Wheaton didn’t shy away from sharing difficult memories. “When we were in production, Corey just really bullied me a lot,” he admitted. “And like, Corey’s a lot, but he’s been through a lot, and I have a lot of empathy and love for him. Our lives were not as different as my parents made us believe they were.”

He smiled as he remembered Jerry O’Connell’s warmth. “Jerry is the sweetest, kindest, funniest guy you will ever meet. He is guileless and delightful, and that is Vern,” he said.

Discovering the Connection Years Later

One of the most moving moments of his talk came when he described how it took decades to understand why he had been cast as Gordie. “I couldn’t figure out why I got this part,” he said. “I loved reading and I loved storytelling, and I was a little bit of a hobby writer the way that Gordie was. But I didn’t understand what connected me to his character until I was in my 40s and I realized, oh my God, just like Gordie, my dad hated me. I was invisible in my house. I was so sad. And I just needed friends. And I didn’t know that until later.”

A Dream for a 40th Anniversary Reunion

Looking ahead, Wheaton shared his hope to bring the film back to theatres in a big way. “I would love to have the movie come back out, screening it in 35 millimeter and doing a Q and A afterward,” he said. “I think it would be really special. I want to do something that celebrates the film and what it means to now, like, three generations of audiences.”

Challenges with Stephen King’s Story Rights

Naturally, any celebration of the film would also honour its literary roots, but Wheaton revealed it hasn’t been easy to get the necessary permissions. “This is the most no-brainer pairing of material and performer in history,” he said, sounding frustrated. “We are having an incredibly difficult time getting the rights holders to acknowledge that we exist.”

He even joked about taking a more direct approach. “What I’m actually considering doing is narrating the first chapter and just releasing it and waiting for their lawyers to contact me so we can discuss it,” he said, prompting laughter and applause from the audience.

The Magic That Made It Last

Before wrapping up, Wheaton reflected on why Stand By Me has never faded from popular culture. “It’s just one of those things. Everything has to go absolutely right, and a lot of stuff can really go wrong,” he said. “But I guess it’s a testament to Rob, yeah. And it’s the reason that it has endured and stood the test of time.”

Nearly 40 years later, Stand By Me is still that rare film that feels as honest and powerful as the day it was released. Judging by the response at Montreal Comiccon, audiences will be more than ready to celebrate its legacy all over again.

Star Trek, The Big Bang Theory, and More Honest Reflections

Of course, while on stage, he also fielded plenty of questions about Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Big Bang Theory, and his other projects. One tidbit that he mentioned was how he loved going to engineering on the Enterprise because it had all four walls and a ceiling and so it really made it feel like you were on board a starship. He loved the cast he worked with. I mean, who wouldn’t when you characters like Picard, Worf, Troi, and the rest of the crew played by phenomenal actors?!

He talked about how he was being held back from advancing his career by power hungry producer Rick Berman. He also didn’t hold back when sharing his views on the darker side of fame, warning that parents who push their young children to become Internet influencers are, in his words, “monsters.” He explained that many of these kids will grow up to be deeply troubled as they realize they lost their childhood, something he knows firsthand. I appreciated how forthcoming he was with his views on what had happened to him and his warning for others in his position.

A D&D Twist

On a more uplifting note, he proudly shared that his son had recently completed his master’s degree, a milestone that clearly meant a lot to him. No one asked him about his Star Wars jacket but to make the Q&A even more memorable, he invited everyone who asked a question to contribute a word to help fill in a Dungeons & Dragons-themed Mad Lib! At the end, he read the entire resulting page. Asking for words from the audience one at a time added an extra layer of fun and laughter to a session fans will not soon forget.
