These Woods Will Make You Crazy
If there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout my brief history on this planet, it’s that no good can ever come from wanting to play tennis. This comes as no surprise in Isreal’s first horror film Rabies, directed by Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado.
A woman is trapped down a hole in the middle of the woods. When her brother runs into the road to get help, he’s struck by four friends dressed in their tennis whites (like a bunch of jerks) on their way to a match. The two men go with him into the woods as the women wait by the car and call the police. That’s when things go haywire.
Rabies is a film that’s been on my “must watch” list for years. I don’t know why I never got around to checking it out, but I’m glad it was part of my 31 days of horror. I expected it to riff on 28 Days Later based solely on the title, and since I never actually took the time to read the synopsis. But going in blind made for such a rewarding experience. I was on the edge of my seat. Nothing played out as I expected. Things went from bad to worse, way beyond what I could imagine. There were even moments when I felt like yelling at the screen to warn characters of what was about to happen. I can honestly say I’ve rarely felt this way while watching a movie in my living room all by myself, which just goes to show what an impressive accomplishment Rabies truly is.
If I had to pick one film as my favourite out of the few that I’ve watched so far, Rabies would be it. If I’m lucky enough to find a few more to stack up beside it this will be a horror movie marathon worth the effort. Highly recommended.
