Throughout the centuries, many civilizations and cultures have practice some form of meditation. The past 50 years, our part of the world has seen a revival and a renewal of interest in meditation. We’re seeing its introduction into medicine, education and business. Though its prevalence is increasing, and its methods diversifying, there are clear challenges when it comes to meditation.

Have you ever tried to sit down and meditate? It is a simple concept, quieting the mind, though not easy. The first thing you realize when you begin to meditate is that your mind is very active. You begin to notice you’ve got a lot of thoughts going on.

So how do you go about dealing with the challenges of meditation? How do you quiet your mind, when it is so busy? Here are some tips that are sure to be of benefit:

Don’t try to quiet your mind. Meditation is an exercise in not doing. If you’re trying, you’re thinking. Do try to meditate. In order to get your mind into a passive state, a meditative state, you need to approach it passively. So don’t try to quiet your mind. Just sit and relax.

Pick a sound to focus on. When you’re sitting in your chair or on your bed, attempting to meditate, pick out a sound in your environment to focus on. It can be an air conditioner, or radiator. It can be the sound of the wind or the rain. It could be a high-pitched hum from lights or the sound of your fridge. When calming your thoughts, it helps to take one thought and focus on it. You want to pick a though that is neutral to you. That’s why picking a sound to focus on is helpful.

Focus on your breathing or your heartbeat. This is similar to focusing on a sound. It allows you to pick a thought to focus on it. The added benefit here is that your heartbeat and breathing will change as you relax. These will themselves help to induce a meditative state.

Meditation isn’t complex, it’s simple. These easy to remember meditation tips will go a long way toward helping you quiet your mind and relax. Remember that every attempt you make to meditate is of value. The more you practice, the better you’ll get it.
