Z Tapas Lounge in Downtown Montreal is Ready for You

Hotel Zero 1 may be an unusual name for a hotel but don’t let that detract attention away from its atypical, yet modern pop art style. Nestled within the hotel’s ground floor is Downtown Montreal’s newest restaurant and bar, Z Tapas Lounge.

Located on the corner of Saint Laurent Boulevard and Rene Levesque Boulevard in the Quartier des Spectacles (Montreal’s entertainment district), I could see how the space could attract more than the tourists staying there.

I attended the eatery’s launch party last night. The occasion was meant to be a “cocktail and menu discovery” event and it certainly was.

Two Main Rooms

The restaurant is divided into two main sections. The primary room is a moderately-sized restaurant with an attractive bar and humidor. The second room, with its very high ceiling and couches had a lounge atmosphere. When you look up, you could see the hotel room windows facing the inside of the building.

Latin-inspired Food

Chef Marielvi Falvino is behind the full menu which consists mostly of small plates and four main courses. They also have lighter fare (e.g., mac ‘n’ cheese), classics (e.g., club sandwiches, sliders, lobster rolls), and desserts (e.g., churros with chocolate sauce, cheesecake with carmelized pineapple).

Some of the smaller plates include:

  • Tomato soup and guajillo pepper, with roasted tortillas, avocado, and radish salsa
  • A meat and cheese platter
  • Mussels and fries
  • Beef carpaccio, chimichurri mayo and watercress salad
  • Braised duck on a thick tortilla, with chocolate sauce

The main courses are:

  • Surf and turf paella
  • Grilled meats with roasted yuk and avocado sauce
  • Pan seared fish with beer and turkey chorizo broth, grilled potatoes and cherry tomatoes
  • Vegetarian pastry with red pepper sauce

Cocktail Menu

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to try the cocktails due to my cold but I spoke with fellow members of the media who insisted they were excellent. They certainly looked tasty. That alone will bring me back for a taste test!

Should you go?

The menu is moderately priced. If you’re in the downtown area and want to experience tapas and cocktails in a trendy lounge atmosphere, give Z Tapas Lounge a try.
