5 Reasons the Law of Attraction Doesn’t Work For You (Part 5)

If the Law of Attraction teaches anything it’s that your ability to alter your perspective is the defining element in your life. You cannot experience anything that you cannot perceive.

Your perception is also completely under your control. What you like or don’t like is up to you. Is guacamole good or bad? Are scary movies good or bad? Is getting a tattoo good or bad? Is dropping out of school good or bad? Is being the president of the United States good or bad? What about being the Pope? Or being a foreigner? Or living in a trailer versus a mansion? It’s all your choice.

And now for the final chapter in this saga, reason five for why Law of Attraction isn’t working for you.

5. You’re Letting Definitions Get in Your Way

Lookit. It’s ALL good. Emotions respond to thoughts, and thoughts are patterns of beliefs. In other words how you see things, how you think about them, generate an emotion. But you have complete control over how you think about anything!

You need not be stuck on the definitions you have. If you define a situation as bad then you’ll have a negative thought pattern and a negative emotion. But if you change the definition to something more pleasing then you’ll have a pleasing thought and a pleasing emotion.

Nothing is intrinsically or objectively good or bad. They are only good or bad in relationship to those who perceive it. You get to decide. Now you might be thinking that there are bad things in the world and that it would be a better place if there was no hunger, or poverty, or war, or death and that we’d have a utopia on Earth if everyone just did this or that. Yet if you think about it longer you’ll eventually come to realize that if you could get rid of all the “bad” stuff you’d also be getting rid of the all the good.

Everything in the universe has two sides: the presence of something and the lack. Everything is like that. Hunger / Satisfaction. Poverty / Prosperity. War / Peace. Life / Death. Light / Dark. Up / Down. Inside / Outside. Hot / Cold. Joy / Pain. Love / Hate. Sleep / Awake. Eagerness / Boredom. Advanced / Underdeveloped. Health / Sickness. Success / Failure. Nothing exists independently of it’s counterpart. To get rid of one part is to get rid of the other.

So if you enjoy sight then you have to accept that the possibility of blindness comes with it. If you like having a house then the potential for homelessness is implied. And so on and so forth.

But, for the sake of argument, let’s say you could get rid of the bad and keep the good what would the experience of life be like? Imagine a world where no one ever died. Where no one ever got sick. Where no one ever went even a second without instantly having everything they need in every moment. Never any conflict whatsoever. Never any lack of anything. What a boring would it would be!

It is the contrast between the wanted and unwanted that causes desire to be born. The zest and zeal of life is wanting something, not having it, find a way of moving towards it, experiencing it, and now wanting something new. That happens again and again and again to everyone, to everything including plants and animals, and will continue to happen always. It’s the process of life that’s fun and the diversity that gives it the flavour.

Looking at the world this way and understanding that even the bad needs to exist for there to even be good, then you see that it’s all really good and nothing is wrong… or rather, nothing needs to be wrong. You get to choose your perspective, always. Understand that and see how quickly Law of Attraction becomes obvious in your life.

Conclusion

Really though, don’t take Law of Attraction so seriously. It’s happening whether you want it to or not so just roll with it and have fun. In fact here’s a bonus tidbit for those of you who are ready to hear it. There’s only ever one reason you want to have, to be, or to do anything: you think you will be happier (or you’ll prevent suffering which is the flip side of the same coin).

You want a car because you think it’ll make you happier. You want a new job because you think it’ll make you happier. You want lots of money because you think your life will be more pleasant that way. You want a loving relationship because it’ll feel good. You want a more attractive body because you’ll find yourself more attractive and will feel happier.

Joy is the reason why anyone does anything, why anyone believes anything. It’s the ultimate answer to all proximate answers. It’s the why existence exists, to experience more joy. Filter your thoughts through that paradigm and you’ll never need to read another article like this again.
