How to Choose the Right Gym

How to Choose the Right Gym

Trying to get in shape for the next special event in your life? Have an extra pesky 10-15 pounds you just can’t seem to lose? Or maybe, you’re determined to have a healthier lifestyle overall. Whatever the case may be, you’ve decided to join a gym.  But, how do you navigate all the different gyms out there and how do you find one that is right for you? Here are a few simple things to consider as you try to navigate the obstacle course of exercise facilities.

Counting the Cost

Whether you join a gym that charges you month-to-month or requires an annual membership, there are fees involved.  Most mainstream gyms offer a 2-week trial period or guest pass for you to try out their facilities and programs.  Make sure to look for gyms that offer this option.  You should choose a facility that you enjoy visiting and are willing to pay for.  Always ask up-front about any extra fees, what is included with your membership, cancellation policies and any hidden costs that may come up.  If you have a budget, be sure to ask if there are any discounts or subsidies available to off-set the cost of the membership.

You might also consider finding out if your employer offers healthy workplace incentives. You may have access to an employee health fund or money available to pay for your gym membership.  Remember to never sign a contract unless you are absolutely sure you want to join that gym and can afford it. There is no need for your good intentions to later become an expensive reminder.

Watch Out for the Bogus Sales Pitch

Every Gym I have ever been to gave me some ridiculous sales pitch about how the usual cost is like $999/year but because I came in during a “special” they are willing to sell me a memership for $399 or something significantly lower. This is a typical non-sense hard core sales pitch so don’t believe a word of it. In fact, most gyms just want you to join at any cost because they know that once you’re in, you’ll keep paying, whether you use the service or not.

Identifying Your Needs

Make a list of qualities and resources you are looking for in a gym.  Do you need a gym with specific equipment (e.g. treadmill, stepper machine, free weights)? Are you looking for a gym that offers group sessions such as pilates, aerobics, yoga or kick-boxing? Do you need access to a personal trainer? Spa? Pool? Are childcare providers and nutritional advisers a priority for you? These are all things to consider when you are shopping for a gym.

All gyms have a specific focus like weight-training, aerobic fitness, personal training programs.  Choose one that caters to your specific needs and note, you may be paying for extra services with your membership fees—make sure you are paying for services you will use.

Other Important Factors

Location, location, location.  At first, your motivation will probably be quite high to go and workout, but over time, your motivation may fade.  Choose a gym that you will be able to get to without any difficulty so you eliminate that extra excuse.  Hours of operation may also be an important factor to consider.  If you are only able to workout at certain times, choose a gym that is open during those hours (choose a 24-hour facility if you work odd hours).

Comfort and intimidation issues may also come into play.  If you are a relatively shy person and insecure, joining a gym that intimidates you when you walk in the door, probably isn’t a good pick for you.  Instead, look for a gym that you feel welcome attending and that has staff members who are positive and encouraging.   Many facilities are now offering a women only section that may help some feel more comfortable and at ease.

Regardless of whether you want to gain muscle, train for a marathon, improve your fitness level or lose weight, choosing the right gym for you is an important step towards your goal.  This is a major investment into your health and life and should be considered carefully.  Because you will be spending a significant amount of time and money at the facility, it is important to take the process seriously and look for a gym that is a right fit for you.
