There are all kinds of reasons to work abroad but, more often than not, the principal purpose is always the same: people just want to spice up their life. Well, it’s not that hard to do. Whether you’re a highly-skilled x-ray technician or a high school graduate without much experience, there’s always something out there if you’re brave enough to give it a shot. Get your immigration documents ready and get moving… another culture and way of life is waiting for you!
One word of caution: Before choosing any work abroad, be it teaching English as a second language in South America or building bridges in Asia, always check the background and reviews of a hiring company or the scout that contacts you. There are many nasty employers out there that take advantage of the unsuspecting. That said, there are tons of opportunities for the skilled and the not-so skilled workers.
Little Skill Required
Teaching English: Teaching English as a second language (ESL) isn’t as hard as you might think. You are more likely to get a job teaching English if you have, at the very least, a bachelor’s degree or ESL training, but education and certification aren’t always required. To make the big bucks, say, in Japan, however, degrees are necessary. Often times ESL jobs provide room and board.
Labor: While US-based companies are outsourcing abroad for cheap labor, others are looking for English-speaking workers who are can understand orders and do it right the first time. The shipping and oil industries are always hiring people willing to work hard all over the world. Also, there are globetrotting crews that set up for concerts, shows, festivals or fairs and there are plenty of vacant manual labor positions with international construction companies available.
Hospitality: While hotel management or working the front desk often demands multilingual, highly-educated employees, there are plenty of positions accessible to those willing to work hard. If you can ride horses, you can be a trail guide. If you can mix drinks, you can tend bar. If you’re trained as a lifeguard … well, the list goes on. Cruise ships and hotels, either on the mountain or on the beach, are always scouting for new employees.
Medium Skill Required
Interpreter: Perfectly bi- or multilingual people are in luck when searching for work abroad. Be it hotels, government agencies or even hospitals, language interpreters are always needed. Working as a company’s onsite translator can be a demanding job, but the pay is hefty and room and board are often provided.
Real Estate Agent: Believe it or not, there is a lot of work still to be had selling vacation homes and businesses. People are still buying property in places like Costa Rica and Jamaica, but real estate companies need agents to clinch the sale. Be it a beachside bungalow or a fixer-upper restaurant, people are looking for a getaway just like you. Why not create your getaway by selling them theirs? Experience in real estate and language skill is required.
Skilled Labor: Welders are in high demand all around the globe as steel is a major component of any structure. Other skilled labor jobs include brickwork, window installation, insulation, plumbing, machinists, finish carpentry and pre-fabrication assembly. Being good with your hands can mean big bucks and seeing the world, but employers are seeking the cream of the crop with plenty of experience and vocational training.
High skill Required
Medical field: Be it nurses, doctors or medical technicians, people with medical training are needed in the far reaches of the planet. With a degree and a willingness to travel, trained specialists can work almost anywhere. Even social workers and psychologists are in high demand. While some doctors donate their skills to countries in need, others use their training to land first-class employment anywhere they want.
Scientist: Highly-trained scientists who are exceptional in the field of research or application are needed in various industries. The pharmaceutical industry is always seeking out new, innovative scientists and, of course, they are not afraid to pay big money to the best of the best. Archeologists, paleontologists, biologists and more are all working all over the world.
Engineer: With specialties that range from computers and chemistry to mechanics and civil design, highly-trained engineers are needed everywhere. Many engineers work as consultants, taking jobs on a per-contract basis. This means they get flown out to new countries, housed and fed while they work on whatever project or problem the company may have. Many companies have highly-paid, full-time engineers overseeing global projects.
International jobs are just a search away! You can really have a great time while you experience a different culture and live another life so to speak.
