Living a healthier lifestyle is merely a matter of knowing what (and what not) to do. If you want to feel better and look better but you aren’t sure how to get started, take a look at these tips. Some are simple enough while you may need to work at others. Still, millions of people around the world live active and healthy lifestyles by engaging in combinations of these tips and sticking to them. It may be easy to get started but then get easily sidetracked. You have to stick with it.
Cut Out Sugar
This one might be easier said than done, considering how much sugar is included in the average North American diet. Cutting out sugar means eliminating any sugared cereals, skipping sugar in your coffee, and paying attention to the sugar content on the back of any packaged foods.
Cook More Often
When you take the time to cook your meals, you are doing your body a world of good. Instead of purchasing packaged foods that contain a slew of chemicals, choose real foods (fruits, veggies, meats) that you cook yourself. With a couple of simple recipes, the cooking process can be easy. There is little to no proof that organic foods are any more healthy than ordinary foods so don’t worry about the added expense if you can’t afford it. People have been living long lives without organic food long before they became popular.
Exercise
Everyone knows that exercise leads to a healthy lifestyle, but what kinds of exercises are worth your time? Basically, any exercise that gets your heart pumping for at least thirty minutes is beneficial. Step on the treadmill, walk around the block, or attend a yoga class – any exercise is good exercise!
Stop the Junk!
If you eat a lot of junk food (you know who you are!), then you aren’t doing your body any favours. Nearly anything that doesn’t contain actual nutrients (chips, cookies, cakes, soda), isn’t good for you. This is one of those areas that you may not want to stop cold turkey but rather ween yourself off of over time. To do so, cut down on snacking while watching TV, don’t order a soda when you’re at a restaurant and take other actionable steps in your life. Examine your habits and make a conscious decision, either in advance or on the spot to cut down. It won’t be easy in the beginning but it will pay off.
Learn to Breathe
Believe it or not, stress can wreak havoc on your body. When you learn to relax, you are effectively giving your body a chance to recuperate. Learn yoga, try meditating, or eliminated any aggression by playing a highly physical sport.
Join Sports Teams
Even if you aren’t athletic, you can live a healthier lifestyle simply by becoming a part of a team. Studies show that people who are involved in team sports stick with those sports longer due to team encouragement. Call your local recreation center and find out about the leagues they have. Many sports are on a “show up and play” basis which could be great for you.
Get a Pet
This is more for your mental health but it certainly plays into your holistic or overall healthy lifestyle. Animals have the ability to lift spirits, encourage exercise, and bring an overall sense of peace to your life. If you can’t have an animal where you live, consider volunteering at your local animal shelter – even a few hours spent with an animal per day will help you feel better about yourself.
In the beginning, it may be difficult but in the long-run you’ll probably find that you don’t want a lot of the unhealthy habits that you used to have.
