DJ Lady Bex

DJ Lady Bex

The April 2006 spotlight is on English DJ Lady Bex. It seems that most female DJs come from the UK and each has a unique style. Bex is a DJ as well as an occasional model – not bad! She has 4 weekly residencies which makes her one busy talent! proudly presents Miss April 2006, DJ Lady Bex.

Citynet Magazine: Let’s hear about the young Lady Bex.

DJ Lady Bex: I had a lovely childhood, spoiled little brat some say, daddy’s little girl, always been a girlies girl and always got what I wanted!! I was fairly active – enjoyed dancing and playing kiss chase, etc. [Editor’s note: Kiss chase, eh?]dj-bex-1

Did the boys love/hate/tease you in high school?

A bit of everything. Some teased me cause I had a big poodle perm!! haha got called poodle head – didn’t really blossom until I left school! Or grow boobs until I left school!!!

How did get into DJing?

I was working abroad in Greece, bar work/dancing/promoting and getting paid terrible for long hours. A friend told me to get into DJing so I walked into a bar advertising for a DJ. I was wearing next to nothing and said I’m a DJ and they gave me the job! I didn’t even know how to press play on the CD players! Anyway, after a summer of DJing I knew enough to get work in UK. I bought some Technics, learned on vinyl and talked my way into residencies in the UK!!! I was lucky and lippy!! It’s all right time right place and who you know!

What made you stick with it?

The buzz you get when you drop a HUGE CHOON! I enjoy the music, the buzz and the attention! I didn’t find it easy to learn how to DJ but I found it enjoyable and unbelievable that i was getting paid to do something I enjoyed! [Editor’s note: Choon, eh? Oh, these Brits!]]

What’s your current DJ residency?

At present, I hold 4 weekly residencies, my favourite being Reading University as they have a huge student union – the club I DJ in holds 1,900 and it is capacity most nights! The music policy is commercial which means I can play more or less anything I like!!! The students are up for it and its always a fantastic atmosphere.

Any plans on branching out into some other music-related area?

Not sure yet – I’d love to produce my own music but for the time being I’m into my DJing. I’d love to become a superstar DJ! The female Tiesto I’d make do with!!!!!

How did you get into modeling?

A friend wanted me to go with her to Max Power for support while she was modelling. I went and after a few vodkas I was joining her sprawling out over the cars! hehe – I enjoyed it and got work offers and took them! I don’t really do it that much anymore. The late nights you get with DJing don’t make you look or feel as good as you should for the long sessions modelling requires!!!

What type of modeling do you do?

Not much! I’d always wanted to be a page 3 girl for the sun newspaper but they turned me down. I’ve done modelling shoots for local mags and private shoots and I’ve done the odd car show – max power/fast & furious.

Best experience?

Working with celebs – meeting famous DJs/personal appearances.

Worst experience?

Working with celebs – they get paid more for less hours and most of the time they haven’t a clue how to DJ they are just doing it because they are famous and can!

Frequent Experience?

People always come up to me and say “wow I’ve never seen a girl DJ before” – I really haven’t a clue how to respond to that!

Have people recognized you on the street based on your ‘celebrity status’?

Haha I wish I was that famous! I get “that’s the DJ” when I go to the bar or when I’m in my local town but not very often.

Has anyone ever run up to you in the street and brought you flowers?

Nope – I get asked for my number a lot but it’s not that flattering when the guy asking is drunk outta his head and dribbling. [Editor’s note: dribbling, eh? LOL]

Pet peeves?

People asking me when I’m going to play something decent! (When the dancefloor is packed and they expect me to read there mind to what they class as decent).

Describe your wildest experiences. Are you a big partier?

Not really – the last thing I want to do as a DJ is go clubbing – but when I do, I annoy my friends by just watching the DJ rather than dancing!

Name anyone, alive or dead, who you would love to meet/hang out with/get to know.

Id love to hang around with Robbie Williams/cast of friends and the entire England football team.
Also I’d like to be best mates with Bill Gates.

What do you want the world to know about you?

That I want to be a rich and famous DJ and no one will help me. Can you help me?

What’s the greatest risk you have ever taken?

Chucking in my sensible job to become a DJ professionally. Getting pierced in a very risky place but well worth it. [Editor’s note: Indeed!] Also, going on Safari in Kenya. Yes, that was a risk because the animals scared me, well actually the nutty jeep guide scared me with his driving! Totally recommend it though!

Favorite upcoming projects?

My very own retail shop ( I get asked all time where I get my clothes/etc from so I decided to sell them myself! A pink only product shop!! (lauching May 2006)

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Retired rich and making music for fun.

Where are you from/live now?

Brighton – well Hove actually!
