Sumac Restaurant: A Modern Twist on Middle Eastern Comfort Food

Sumac Restaurant: A Modern Twist on Middle Eastern Comfort Food

I’d been chasing Sumac restaurant like it was the city’s last falafel on Earth. First, people whispered about it like it was a speakeasy for shawarma. Then a friend moved into a condo around the corner and loved going there. And of course, the one time we finally went together, it was closed. Heartbreaking. Another time, I flew solo, stomach growling and hopes high, only to face a line so long it looked like free food was being handed out, so I left. But just recently, the stars aligned, the doors were open, and I finally got in (along with Sarah, who was ready to discover this place as well). And let me tell you, it was worth every failed attempt and dramatic sigh.

It Might Be Best Falafel in Montreal

When we told the cashier it was our first visit, she recommended the falafel. She was absolutely right. It was outstanding. We went halfsies on a falafel plate and a shawarma plate. I am not exaggerating when I say this was the best falafel I have had in Montreal. And that says a lot. There are some fantastic falafel restaurants in the city. Falafel St Jacques, for example, serves truly excellent falafel. But the difference at Sumac is in the texture. The falafel balls are fluffy and light, not dense or heavy.

Flavourful Shawarma Plates

The chicken shawarma plate was also full of flavour. My plate came with roasted cauliflower in a dill cream that was cool and herbaceous, and spicy carrots that were not particularly spicy but they were tasty. The hummus had tehina mixed in, giving it a smooth and rich texture. Everything tasted freshly prepared and thoughtfully seasoned. It was a great example of casual dining that delivers on taste, with a decent presentation.

The pitas were warm and had spices on them. The Israeli salad was good but Sarah insists that my homemade recipe is tastier. I appreciate the compliment given that it’s one of the only dishes I do really well!

A Rich and Memorable Dessert

For dessert, we tried the chocolate brownie. It was rich and indulgent. Maybe a bit too rich for Sarah, but I really enjoyed it. Since we are both mindful about sugar, we took most of it home to enjoy as a small treat later. It is the kind of dessert you take your time with, and it holds up well even after a day in the fridge.

Warm Service and a Welcoming Atmosphere

Sumac has a relaxed and lively atmosphere. You order at the counter, choose a seat, and they bring the food to you. While it is not traditional table service, the staff make the process easy and pleasant. The space itself is clean and simple, with an open layout that works well for both solo diners and small groups. It is a popular spot, so expect some noise and movement, but that is part of the charm. I would also suggest this place for a date, although you might get your hands dirty while eating haha!

Should you eat at Sumac?

Sumac is one of those restaurants that lives up to its reputation. The food is fresh, the portions are satisfying, and the experience feels both approachable and elevated. Whether you are in the mood for falafel, shawarma, or something sweet to finish your meal, Sumac delivers. I waited a while to try it, but now that I have, I can easily see myself going back again soon.
