Green Lantern Movie Review

Green Lantern Movie Review

The Green Lantern. One of my favorite superheroes, well superhero class really since there are thousands of them. Put on a green ring, have faith, imagine whatever you like, and see it manifest instantly. You’d almost think that fans of The Secret commissioned the series. Anyone who is familiar with the comic book series must have been on pins and needles waiting for this movie to hit the theaters.

Well, it’s a shame that the producers didn’t have their own energy rings as they might have created a Green Lantern movie that didn’t blow chunks the way this one did. A lame joke but it needed to be said. Generally I give my conclusion at the end of my reviews but this time I give the whole thing 1.8 thumbs down. Following, for those who like details, are my main justifications.

So there were many reasons I didn’t like this movie. The first and smallest is because I really super-duper enjoyed the fan made trailer for the Green Lantern featuring Nathan Fillion (you can watch it here). Four of the five million views it has on YouTube must have come from me, I’m sure. And because I love Nathan Fillion (*sniff* Firefly), and because the trailer had essentially every awesome scene the creator(s) could get his/her/their hands on, it set the bar epically high for the actual movie. Totally non-realistic expectations but there you go. Hey, they did promote the bejesus out of the movie!

The second reason I didn’t like it was because of the pacing. What on earth was up with the editors of this film? And was it not screened? Often I’d find myself thinking Oh wait, I’m suppose to find this bit funny, aren’t I? There were also too many empty pauses with no music – or near enough as makes no difference – which were effective at bringing me right out of the movie’s flow. I was expecting Ironman quality, not the Hulk (the one with Jennifer Connelly).

The third main reason I dislike the Green Lantern movie was the fight scenes and the ending battle. Unbelievably underwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, the CGI was great, but the execution was so very tame. I remember Meteor Man had better action scenes. (Alright, so that might be a bit of a stretch, sort of, but God of War I and II had amazingly awesome fight scenes and I find it hard to believe that a movie would have a harder time coming up with something comparable.)

Now, now, folks. There were some good bits to this movie. They didn’t fail every action scene; however tedious and predictable I enjoyed the training time with Kilowog. And there was also… nope, that’s it actually. I return to my former point that the movie blew chunks, wads and all that other good stuff. Ryan Reynolds I liked. Everything else was terrible. The music, the acting, the dialogue – ugh! So much not so good stuff in this movie. I’m not even sure how it got a 6.3 on IMDB. I’ll chalk it up to superfans who I’m sure overlayed their own imagination and memories of the comic books onto the movie.
