Saloon Bistro Bar in Montreal Is a Late-Night Village Find That Actually Delivers

Sometimes the best restaurant finds happen when your original plan falls apart. That was my experience with Saloon Bistro Bar in Montreal’s Village. Last year, I was at a show at the Olympia Theatre downtown. It was a Sunday night, the show ended late, and we were hungry enough to start walking around looking for somewhere to eat. That turned into the classic post-show mini-fiasco as we went to a bunch of restaurants, and one after another gave us the same answer. That is, they were closing in a few minutes, or the kitchen was already closed but we could have a drink. When this happens, the usual expectations start to drop pretty quickly. You’re not necessarily looking for the perfect meal but you arejust hoping to find a place that’s still serving food. Then we came across Saloon Bistro Bar. It was open, busy, looked inviting, and we figured, why not?! And I’m glad we did. I’ve now been there three times so I figured I write a review.

A Late-Night Surprise in the Village

Since Covid, countless bars and restaurants have been slow to set their opening hours back to the good old days when they actually stayed open late. I tend to eat later and at varying times as going out to eat with friends is a social outing and getting people together sometimes means later nights. To add to my recent review of Wonders Wafflez which also stays open late, I was happy to add this restaurant to the list.

The first visit surprised us because the food was much better than we expected. That’s not meant as a backhanded compliment. When you walk into a restaurant late on a Sunday night after several places have already turned you away, you’re not always expecting much. You’re hoping for open, decent, and that the food gets the job done! Saloon Bistro Bar came through for us. Both of us were genuinely impressed. The food was good, the room looked great, and the whole place had a polished but relaxed feeling. It didn’t feel like a random backup plan. It felt like a place we should have known about already. That first experience stuck with me enough that when friends came in from out of town, I brought them there. I then brought another friend when we were in the neighbourhood and funny enough, he said he’d been there once before due to the exact circumstances that initially brought me there… nothing else was open and it looked like a solid option.

The Terrace Is Part of the Appeal

Saloon Bistro Bar is in a great part of the Village, and that location matters. Sitting on the terrace in summer gives you dinner, drinks, and people-watching all at once. That part of Ste-Catherine has energy. There are locals, visitors, people heading out, people heading home, people dressed for a night out, and plenty of characters moving through the area. It’s one of those Montreal streets where the sidewalk and pedestrian mall becomes part of the entertainment.

When I brought out-of-town friends there, we sat on the terrace and enjoyed the summer evening. It felt like exactly the kind of place you want to bring visitors when you want them to feel some of the city’s personality without turning the night into a whole production. Some people from your table can even step outside the terrace fencing to smoke and still stay close enough to keep chatting with the group. It’s a small detail, but it adds to the social feel of the place.

The Food Has Been Consistently Good

One good meal can be luck. Three good visits says something. On the most recent visit, I had the beef tartare, and my friend had a burger. Both were solid choices. In the past, I’ve also tried different menu items, including cocktails, bavette, filet mignon, and salads. The filet mignon was an easy win for me because, of course, it’s one of my favourites. Rumour has it that the poutine, mac and cheese, pasta, and ribs are all choices you need to consider. For a bar-bistro setting in such a busy nightlife area, the food and ambiance delivers.

Cocktails, Décor, and Village Energy

The décor deserves a mention because Saloon looks good. The room has style, and the atmosphere feels intentional and has personality. You also want to try the cocktails, including drinks like Purple Rain. I think the energy is there where you go for a full on dinner or just drinks.

Staying Open Late Is a Real Bonus

In a city like Montreal, people assume there will always be somewhere to eat late. That’s not always true, especially on a Sunday night after a show when kitchens start closing earlier than you expect. That’s why Saloon’s late-night appeal matters. The fact that it was open when other places were winding down is the reason I discovered it in the first place. The fact that the food was good is the reason I went back. A restaurant that can rescue the end of a night and still make you feel like you ate somewhere worthwhile deserves credit.

A Strong Pick Before or After a Night Out

Saloon Bistro Bar is one of those places that fits its neighbourhood well. It has food that can stand on its own, cocktails that suit the setting, a terrace that gives you prime Village people-watching, and a location that makes it easy to pair with a show, a summer walk, or a night out. For me, it started as a late-night backup plan after the Olympia. Now it’s a place I’d actually recommend, especially to someone visiting Montreal who wants food, drinks, atmosphere, and a bit of Village energy in one stop.
