Reuben’s Deli and Steakhouse: A Montreal Classic That Still Delivers

Reuben’s Deli and Steakhouse: A Montreal Classic That Still Delivers

Reuben’s Deli and Steakhouse is one of those places you walk past countless times without stepping inside. Tucked into the heart of downtown Montreal, it’s surrounded by shopping on Saint Catherine Street, more known these days for construction and detours than bustling restaurants. With the current state of downtown politics and poor mayoral leadership leaving many locals avoiding the area, it’s easy to forget gems like this even exist. But while covering a story on the Montreal Street Photography exhibit at the McCord Museum, we decided to drop in and we’re glad we did. Open since 1976, Reuben’s is one of those rare spots that has managed to stay relevant without trying too hard.

A Sandwich to Remember

I went with the Famous Super Sandwich. Rye bread, mustard, smoked meat, a classic pickle and cole slaw combo. I subbed the fries for a salad but still stole a few fries from Sarah’s plate. She ordered the Original Reuben Sandwich with grilled smoked meat, melted Swiss, sauerkraut, and their secret sauce on pumpernickel. Every bite of both meals was satisfying and flavourful. My lunch was on the lunch menu so it was $27 instead of $29. I will say that the portion was fair, especially since many restaurants give so little meat in these sandwiches. It’s easy to see why Reuben’s has lasted as long as it has. These sandwiches are exactly what you want when you’re craving Montreal-style comfort food.

Tempted by the Dessert Menu

The dessert options looked decadent with chocolatey options, cheesecakes, and other sugar-packed treats. We passed this time, mostly to avoid the sugar crash, but the dessert menu alone might be worth a return trip. There’s something about sitting in that kind of old-school deli with a slice of chocolate cake and tea that just feels right.

Atmosphere with a Touch of Local Spirit

The vibe in the restaurant was upbeat and relaxed. With Habs jerseys everywhere given the current playoff excitement, and tourists sitting next to us soaking in the experience, the place had a warm, welcoming feel. It’s casual enough for a midweek lunch but special enough to be a pre-hockey game ritual or a downtown stop with friends or family. You could even take a date there, especially if your idea of romance includes great sandwiches and vintage Montreal charm. The tables could use a bit of a touchup but the rest of the restaurant, complete with plates signed by celebrity guests has a nice feel to it. Note that the washrooms are upstairs.

Should you go?

Reuben’s may not be new or trendy, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a solid choice in a city where some of the best meals come from places that have nothing left to prove. Whether you’re a local rediscovering downtown or a tourist looking for a taste of Montreal, Reuben’s is worth the visit.
