Since humankind first grasped the chemical components of alcohol, life on earth has been a lot more tolerable. Not only do we want our alcohol, we want to play with it and play to get it!
From wine to whiskey and bourbon to beer, alcoholic beverages are the easiest way to spice up any occasion. Drinking games, however, take fun to a whole new level and you don’t have to be a college student to enjoy them.
If you’re with friends or looking for some liquid courage, these may be just what you need!
Beer Pong
Beer Pong is easily the most popular drinking game on the circuit these days as partiers only need a collection of plastic cups, some ping pong balls and, of course, beer to play the game. While rules vary, some social circles play a version of table tennis with a net, a ping-pong table and a row of cups. Played doubles or in singles, hitting or landing in an opponent’s cup, which are lined up or arranged in a bowing-pin-like triangle, means points and/or drinking.
Quarters
The game of Quarters is a long-lived classic with countless variations. Sitting in a circle with two to several players, the object is to bounce a quarter into usually a large-mouthed juice glass – sometimes full of beer sometimes not. Scoring usually results in opponents drinking and three in a row can mean funny rule changes that, if broken, result in more drinking. Bring some clean quarters and a few friends to your local Irish pub or other local watering hole and go nuts!
Ice Luge
This rather simple yet effective party centerpiece can be the basis for several different games. Buy a big block of ice (or try to make one at home, although it’s harder than you think) and then, with a chisel or chainsaw, carve two or three Olympic-luge-like tracks for hard liquor or beer to flow. Partiers park themselves at the bottom, mouths agape, waiting for the splash of freshly cooled cocktails, beer or straight liquor. Race or simply enjoy, nothing heats up a party like an Ice Luge, not to mention that fact that it will be a centerpiece of sorts that guests will be talking about for days! Don’t forget to put a plastic container under the luge because it does melt during the party. Also, make sure you can prop it up on angle with something solid.
Board Game Variants
Be it Beeropoly, Beergammon or Beer chess, there seems to be an endless array of board game variants for partiers to enjoy. Either take a normal game set and convert it to a drinking game or buy novelty sets, complete with shot glass game pieces. Even tic-tac-toe can be turned into a drinking game if games like Beeropoly are too complicated for beer-modified minds.
Flip, Sip or Strip
This old classic should only be initiated after warming up with other games as people are usually more willing to take off their clothes once they have a few drinks in them. Players flip a coin into the air, call it mid-flight and, when correct, pass it on. When wrong they either take off an article of clothing or it’s down the hatch with the drink of choice. Some people play with shots of liquor, meaning missed-calls quickly lead to very drunk, very naked or both.
TV-watching Drinking Games
Get a bunch of episodes from your favorite TV shows and make some drinking rules (like, everytime so and so does X, we all drink). Here are some for Smallville and Lost.
Flip Cup
Sometimes played with shots rather than plastic beer cups, this racing game is as simple as it gets and guaranteed to make even the most experienced binge drinker quiver. Lining up shots or beers on the table, players relay through the drinks, flipping the cups or shot glasses face down when done – placing two fingers on the top of the upturned cup, giving the green light to the next team member.
Bullsh*t
While many different card games can be drinking based, bullsh*t has been a party favorite for decades. Sitting in a circle of up to six players all armed with cards and, of course, their favorite frothy beverage, the mentally challenging game can deliver quite an alcohol-laced punch to less-advanced players. The goal of the game is to rid of all your cards in numeric order, face down in the center, by going around the circle. One can try to fake out opponents, but getting caught means taking a drink for every card in the pile. Calling bullsh*t when a player is, in fact, honest results in equal treatment.
